The words I know so well
A Poem by
Mark D
My tears ran cold As monsters crawled up my leg And tongued upon my knee I started to fumble Over the words I know so well I embark upon the last long walk And unfold my white flag My coffin will have beautiful wood To make them wonder who’s beauty lies within My flag will be presented to my son before I go But what will I say To cool his aching heart? And allow him at will To bring me back to life? Remember these words In a life rich in mistakes They are all I have learned “You are as you decide to be”

Lovely indeed, especially that last stanza. That somber tone of death is so well done.

Sugar, it was beautiful and I can feel so many emotions hitting home.

There is a recurrent theme in the work I've read of yours today - of pulling away. Of death, and of hard lessons learned. "you are as you decide to be" - a profound statement

Oh geez Mark... beauty lies deep within, indeed.
Such a powerful piece, somewhat moving. As usual you put casual words together and turn them into art like an entrancing mosaic of emotions. Personally, this is one of my favourite poems by you.

A poem to enjoy, like the alliteration of the title and the solid, compact verse forms as well as the well thought through last verse, good write.
