More Than You Know

More Than You Know

A Poem by Marinabeana

I’ve known you for such a short time
But I don’t think I’ve seen a smile
On your sweet face in months
A real smile
One that lights up your features
And doesn’t fade quickly
Leaving behind your sad and empty eyes
As you look away
Trying to hide
Embarrassed
Hoping I won’t see
What lies beneath
But I do
And I understand
More than you know
I’m not sure how to explain
How much empathy I have
Gathered in my tired and hollow bones
But please stay and find out
That sometimes my body is heavy
And I can’t get up off the floor
From time to time
My eyes can be sad and empty too
I wish I could help
Take away that feeling
That I know all too well
Instead let me lay with you
And keep you company
Until it passes
