Thoreau’s Footsteps

Thoreau’s Footsteps

A Poem by Marina
"

#20

"
I, too
wanted to live deliberately -

to walk into the woods
in Thoreau’s footsteps
seeking that fabled
detritus riddled trail
to transcendence -

but I found
the real woods were gone -

trails had become pathways
and there were just bones
heaped upon concrete piles
of more bones -

remnants of forebears
arrogates of ashrams
once lured by the minds
call of the wild -

who strayed from trails
became lost in the mire
and perished unideal -

in unknown places
where no wild animal
even exists to suck
on their marrow.

Here in Michigan. We have the great forest and the lakes. I believe the cold days of Winter keep people from trying to live in the cold and the snow. Hello dear Marina. Where I live in Michigan. Deer and wolves are roaming in the night. Upper Michigan, few people and the forest goes on forever. You home Greece. It is sad. Forest and free animals are gone. Thank you dear friend for sharing the amazing and worthwhile poetry and your thoughts.

dear Marina... there are more footsteps of Thoreau than all the Immigrants ... they will never go deeper than the Roots of a Poets words. Thoreau's words will flower and become a Shower of Blessings to those who touch the Hem of God. Amen... Pat

I think I lived Thoreau's dream in the Appalachians but not quite so romantic as envisioned by the naturalist; every bit as wild and beautiful but with more of an edge of terror and survival in the unforgiving brutality of nature. I enjoyed your poem.

You write with such elegance. Your words are felt deeply. I have read this beautiful piece a few times, and have it tucked among my favorite poems. If only Thoreau were here to read these words! I dream of the greats as well! So special to meet you here! ✨ Maria

It's very sad that there's no possibility left to follow the trail of the great philosopher in this world of today. I could feel your words, walk that woody trail in my mind, and then a concrete pile appears between me and transcendence. To perish unknown, unseen yet in the ultimate bliss of an untouched forest is a dream I share with you and I'm absolutely delighted at how beautifully you shared it here. This is a wonderful poem. I'm thrilled to see you on the Cafe today.

No bones about it...the chance of meeting or being a Thoreau is long gone....
Too much technology that has destroyed what we could have been---the pond is dried up now.
This is a wonderful piece of writing, Marina,
