Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

A Story by Hannah Marie
"

I'm doing a 30 day writing challenge. Day One: Re-write a classic fairy tale. I'm going with my all time favorite, and it hasn't really been re-done a whole lot.

"
"In the fourteenth century, witches and fairies were constantly at odds with each other. Wars raged and battles were fought. The end result for the two species was a stalemate, and the humans of the world were almost extinct. The witches and fairies saw the problem their feud was causing so they decided the best thing to do was create a treaty. The treaty allowed for peace to breakout across all lands between all races. It wasn't soon after the peace broke out that love began to break out as well. That's right everyone! And that's how many of you came to be. There will be a quiz next time. I hope you were listening!" Mr. Schaef, the history professor, finished his monotone lecture right as the bell rang for lunch. He loves telling the story of how we came to be. And by "we," I mean the students of the AMMR.
AMMR stands for "Academy for the Mixed Magical Races." This school is a high school for the kids who have some sort of magical powers, or for the kids who have royal blood running through their veins. Our school is divided between three groups: the fairy-born, the witch-born, and the royal-born. I am a royal born. More like the royal born. I am next in line to rule the country.
You may say, "Hey the royal-borns must rule the school." My answer: false. We do not in any way, shape, or form rule the school. In what our teachers like to call the "real world," Royals do run everything and most everyone is obedient as long as our ruling is fair. However, when it comes to AMMR, the witch-borns and fairy-borns battle it out to get to the top.
I slowly left my class and headed to the dining hall. I walk slowly, because well, that's how princesses walk. I'm meant for grace and poise, and those are things I've been trying to master since I was young. I finally made my way to my seat in the busy dining hall, and just before I sat, I turned to check my chair, and just like I thought, it was gone.
"Nice try Merry! I'm not falling for that one again." My best friend Merry loved to make my chair disappear. Merry is a fairy-born, but the only magic she can do is make things disappear and reappear. She became very unpopular with the fairy-borns, and that's how we became friends. My chair reappeared, and I sat down across from Merry. When Philip approached, our entourage was complete.
"Hey Rose, you look extraordinary today." Philip, my best friend, my boyfriend, and my betrothed. I am the luckiest girl in the kingdom to be betrothed to such a stud. He is at the top of the class and he might be the hottest guy in school. We've been betrothed since I was born. Philip is a prince from one kingdom over. When we get married, we will unite the two kingdoms.
"Thank you my love." Rose made some gagging noises to hide her jealousy. It's almost like a curse. Every royal and fairy in the school is jealous of me. The witches could care less about true love. There is, however, one witch who would love to get her hands on Philip. Mal. She is the queen bee, and she wants to be a real queen. She knows that if she can get Philip to fall in love with her, she can become a real queen, and take the real world back from the royals. Philip swears up and down that he won't give in.
Lunch went by without incident, and just like that I had to part with my friends and head to etiquette class. Whose in that class but Mal? I walked into the class hoping for the best. She reminds me daily that she took this class to prepare for when she is queen, and my response everyday is, "in your dreams."
"Hello, your highness." I've never heard a more sarcastic hello in my life.
"Hello, Mal, your evilness. How are you today?" I tried to sound less sarcastic than she did.
"Class settle down, it's  finally time to begin the tea portion of our classes! It's ever so exciting. I'll pick the partners today! Let's see... Belinda and Fern, Cordelia and Lillian, Persephone and Cindy, and that leaves Mal and Rose." I turned to Mal just in time to see her gagging. I rolled my eyes and sat down at her table with her. We were given some simple instructions, and Mal began pouring the tea. She served me first, and I thanked her.
I drank the tea and it tasted... spiteful. After a few sips I began to feel queasy. I passed out and don't remember much after that. I gathered the rest of the story from what Philip and Merry told me.
Mal poisoned my tea, and I fell into a deep sleep. I was taken up to my dormitory and locked away until Mal relinquished the cure, which she never did. She went mad with evil power and built lava lakes and thorn forests all around my dorm so no one could reach me. Philip and Merry were so upset. They had no idea what to do.

Philip knew that this was his big chance to become a true hero. A hero worthy of a princess. He took up his shield and sword and approached the evil witch Mal. Merry wasn't far behind. She laughed in his face. She began sending flames toward him and Merry. They hid behind his shield and he had an idea.
"Merry, can you possibly make me disappear?"
"Well, I've never tried it on a person before, but I don't see why not, but what's the point in that?"
"Well, if you make me disappear, you can make me reappear over in front of Mal. And then I can take her down from there!" Merry was unsure of her abilities, but she really thought she could do it. With a simple flick of her wand, Philip was gone. And with another flick, he appeared right in front of Mal. He thrust his sword into her chest, and she lay dying on the once thorn covered ground. She looked Philip right in the eyes as her self made kingdom disintegrated.
Laughingly, she said, "You fools! The curse won't die with me! She will!" She cackled until the life left her eyes. Philip and Merry raced to my room. They watched me as I slept/died.
"Merry, one more miracle?" Merry began to cry, knowing that there was no way she could save me. She could only make things go away and appear. She had never attempted something so huge.
"I'll try, but no promises." Philip nodded, and sat, holding my head, on my bed. With a trembling hand, she raised her wand. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She flicked her wand and a visible stream of magic left the end of it and landed right on the lips. Not mine, Philip's.
When she opened her eyes, she sat in awe of her mistake. Philip was shocked and he began laughing, but soon after his laughter turned to crying. Merry, also crying, knelt at the side of my bed and began apologizing. Philip leaned down to me whispering his final goodbyes. He kissed my lips so gently, and that's where my memory picks back up.
I remember waking up to the love of my life kissing me. The best kiss of my life, well, second best. The first words he said were, "I love you, Sleeping Beauty."
From then on, things got back to normal. School was back to normal, except the witches, mandated by my father, were watched a lot more closely. Soon after that, we graduated from school and lived our real world lives. My father became ill and in order for me to take over the kingdom, I had to get married. I didn't really have to. I got to.
The wedding was beautiful. Right before our first kiss as man and wife, he said, "I love you, Sleeping Beauty." Then, we kissed. And that was the best kiss of my life.
