The Love He Never Can HaveA Poem by Maria RetzThe Phantom of The Opera inspired me to write this poem.
He holds the black rose
so gently between his hands,
a symbol of the love
he never can have.
He stares at me with tears,
burning behind his eyelids.
I don’t know what to say.
He softly touches my cheek,
with a grey, old finger of lust.
He knows he cannot have me,
that he forever is alone
in this frightening world
they call Earth: the world of humans.
I don’t know how to react.
He sighs so heavily of despair,
knowing loneliness is all
he ever will learn from life.
Forgiveness is the only love
he’ll ever feel inside
the dark heart of his.
I don’t know how to leave him.
He carefully moves closer,
one last try to feel the warmth
from my skin, shaking of fear.
I cannot help but feel sick,
when his breath touches my lips.
He stops before hurting me.
I don’t know what to do.
I turn around and start to run,
I fear he will follow me in madness,
but soon, all I hear behind me
is his devastated scream.
All those years of devastation,
a cold, cruel future awaits him.
I cannot help but to cry for his faith.
