The Goat

The Goat

A Poem by Black Branches

Goats fallen into the ravine
Their blood on the rocks,
Every moment is dangerous,
A herald of death,
A goat lying down
To rest on the rocky hill,
Hidden from land predators.

This is tricky to review, with such unexpected subject matter.

Of course, I wondered what inspired this; and feel compelled to assume that you may have witnessed such a grim spectacle.

I suppose the horrible site, may have touched upon your emotions. Not necessarily, just the sight of any blood. But, also perhaps the sheer helplessness of these animals.

Unlike dogs, goats are far more likely to become trapped; or lose their way. Broadly speaking, they're hardly more intelligent than sheep.

By contrast with the danger of this location, you have pointed out a lying down goat; on the "rocky hill". In the context, if it being a bit safer from predators by concealment. Even so, it may even be a lucky coincidence; if safer there. Indeed, more likely that it was just resting; or taking shelter from adverse weather? Or, was a known predator of goats known to you; and prowling that area?

Thanks for sharing.
