Cold

Cold

A Poem by Black Branches

The wind flutters your black cloak,
You smoke a cigarette
With a hand frozen from the cold,
The red fragments of your heart
Are piled beneath your feet,
You’re going nowhere
Because of your love’s hold.

In this piece, it isn't just a heart; beneath your feet. It's a broken heart, in "red fragments"; which raises questions ..

Who broke your heart? And, it must have been someone very close; because that "love" still holds you in thrall. Enough to ensure, "you're going nowhere".

Indeed, heart break could be enough to drive someone; to live a mostly solitary existence - in a remote but tranquil forest.?

Even so, those heart fragments haven't been flung around. They have not been placed in an elegant crystal vase; to adore for posterity. Instead, they're "piled beneath your feet". So, either you intend to bury them; so as to be "out of sight out of mind". Or, trample them into oblivion with your feet..?

Of course, only the writer knows for sure; and readers should never assume that a piece of writing was necessary inspired by something in the writer's life.

Best wishes, Black Branches.
