Venus’s Roses

Venus’s Roses

A Poem by Mari Chubinidze

Red roses planted in a filthy ravine,
For the bliss of passersby.
Brought there by witches,
Visually stunning,
Left at the mercy of rain,
Blooming red.
The wise will say it is in honor of the mortals,
While the lowly will glance with irony,
Their eyes deceitful.
Just as Venus embodies perfect beauty,
Red creations have emerged in this filthy place,
Tender roses, the ravine’s charm.

I'll start with the title, which I like. Venus was the Roman goddess of love, and that linkage with roses is fittingly romantic. Despite being abandoned and alone, "at the mercy of rain", in a "filthy ravine"; those beautiful roses have managed to grow and bloom. The final line suggests, that those roses have become "the ravine's charm". But, why are witches included in this piece? Well, witches are obviously associated with evil acts; and their throwing those roses in the filthy ravine could be construed as an evil act. Or, simply to sneak something in which casually references halloween; particularly as it's drawing closer.? Of course, only the writer knows all of her reasoning; for sure. Thankyou for sharing, and I hope that you keep writing.
