Silence deepens within me like a black rock,
when scientists discovered that even plants speak in their own language.
My silence remains silent, like a thorned rose untouched by anyone.
Only I know the depths of that rock, the breath of the rose’s silence.
And my black heart,
my breath of stone,
which is terrifying like the portrait of Dorian Gray, weighed down by its gravity.
my hands that cross in sleep, protecting me from loneliness.
Oh, my silence,
my silence,
silence,
dark silence,
shrouded in mystery,
you, yourself, within your own being.
Well, this made me think of a brief phase in the distant past; when I had been emotionally withdrawn and feeling low. However, even if this piece relates to that subject matter; it may be just conjecture on the part of the writer. In other words, just a topic which she felt like writing about. The emphasis on silence, could be showing that the protagonist feels voiceless; or trapped if people are treating her - as if she's remaining silent. As if perhaps, she's been feeling ignored. The rose of the title may just be suggesting, that this is about a woman's experiences and feelings.? Or, even just that the writer finds it to be an attractive flower; of course. Silence can be owned, and something which we can have for ourselves; as suggested towards the end. There are some emotive terms, used here. Such as, "my breath of stone"; and "my black heart". Those terms in other contexts, are sometimes used to represent evil or coldness. But, in this poem; I genuinely couldn't tell quite what they might refer to.The poem could be seeking to portray, different ways in which silence can be expressed; whilst also implying that it has a mysterious side to it. And, that when we're alone; that silence envelops us (and becomes one with the unique essence of our own being)?.
