When the Butterflies Fly Away

When the Butterflies Fly Away

A Story by Mari Baptiste

What exactly should love be?

Is it the butterflies in your stomach every time they’re near you?

Is it the professions of undying love every night before bed?

I wish I could say yes.

What exactly is love?

It’s waking up to sound of that person getting ready for work, and feeling their Good Morning kisses as you fall back asleep.

It’s going on video calls without a single bit of makeup and just being comfortable talking.

It’s looking at that person and just thinking “wow.”

It isn’t the same feeling you get from the butterflies. It’s a lot subtler...more mellow.

It’s falling in deeper in love with that person even when they aren’t saying anything.

It’s when you don’t put your best foot forward anymore; you’re comfortable just being yourselves around each other.

It’s when you can think of how much you love that person, even when they’re doing the dishes.

It’s laughing at inside jokes together.

It’s the soft kisses after a fight

It’s telling each other to get lots of rest instead of staying up late together.

It’s when you choose to love each other, even though it can get hard.

It’s realising you love each other and can’t live without each other, even when the butterflies are gone.

It’s realising that you love each other more than the butterflies.

A silky smooth finish to a gently put recipe of how to love, to rest in the reality of it... of believing wholeheartedly that what you have together is more beautiful, more precious, than anything else...

Ever the romantic, i want to stay a few seconds longer and bathe in your finely laid words.

(Observation: second line 'they've' suggests many lovers when seems as you continue, you're referring to that one special person..)

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! This is so perfectly stated to reflect the true nature of everyday love! Finally someone wrote it exactly the way I feel it should be! I get so tired of love being too perfect or else heartbreaking in the many love poems that are written here. I gave up that gyrating roller coaster long ago. But since I have no experience in this true kind of love, here you've shown me a multi-layered painting of how irresistible it can be! Maybe some day mine will come!?!?! I REALLY LOVE THIS! The above are true. Love mean. Your goal is ensure your love is happy. Can mean buying flowers or candy. Maybe dancing in the rain? Thank you Mari for sharing your outstanding poetry.
