The Search for Wonderland

The Search for Wonderland

A Poem by Margie F

C 2001

What a brilliant plan I had one day.
When once, I planned to run away
to a magical place called Wonderland
to play with Alice when I got there.

I traveled for what seemed like miles and miles
waving hellos and yelling good-byes,
but I could never find Alice’s house
and decided I’d give up and return to my house.

When I returned to the place I call home
my mother was pacing up and down the floor.
She ranted and raved, screaming, “Where have you been?”
I could never reveal I didn’t find my friend.

So, I made up a story she’d surely believe--
I said, “I was carried off by killer bees.
They took me to a place blindfolded and then
said I could never tell where I had been.”

She stewed and stewed, and then she smiled.
She said, “You had me worried. You forgot the time!”
I looked at her bewildered, and then
she said, “Go to your room! Alice is waiting there.”
