Relatively Safe

Relatively Safe

A Poem by Margeaux Souter

You never know who’s watching,

Only that they are

You don’t know what they’re like up close,

Only from afar

You know it gives them pleasure,

To hold something over you

You don’t know that they treasure,

Everything they stole from you

You know they don’t care,

About the people they step on

You couldn’t begin to fathom,

The thoughts that are soon here and even sooner gone

You don’t try to understand,

What’s going through their minds

You just try to run,

From those of their kinds

You think that they should be locked away,

So your families can be safe,

But safe is a relative term.
