Chained

Chained

A Poem by Mareis
"

This describes a slave's journey across the middle passage.

"

In my dreams, I fly.

I fly far away

To my past,

And a horrific future

Dark mysteries lie ahead of me,

While tragedy lies behind me.

Taken, Trapped, Tortured,

Lost

Our chains rattle with confliction.

Our bodies apart, but minds as one

We know nothing

Together we struggle

We lose, We win

We cry, We scream

As one we suffer

One race, One people

A union that can’t be broken,

An unspoken bond,

My salvation

They take us atop the ship,

And Mercilessly spray our backs

As one we scream,

As one we are defeated

Our shared mind slowly becomes small

As sickness and death take us,

In short yet eternal days.

I pray for Death to steal me

From men.

No, monsters

New land lines the horizon,

And our disheartened eyes stare cautiously

The monsters around us rejoice

laughing, dancing, drinking,

Beating

They ooh and ahh at my slender figure

They poke, they stare, they gloat

They bid, they buy, they trade,

They STEAL

I am wingless

I am maimed

I am broken

I am chained
