grey thoughts 2

A Poem by Marcus Mckenzie

these bones rest like restive driftwood

now grounded
now floating in the limbo
of gentle, persistent surf

too shallow for freedom
too deep for peace

steady assault
wears and weathers
time's tides dragging by
sculpt and scour

bark fails and flakes away
replaced
by something much harder
the insensate overpopulated seas
mercilessly inculcate their brine

i wonder if the heart hates
the rigid confinement of its armour
or just the need for it

i wonder if snails enviously eye slugs
