A Poem by Michelle Tarnowski
"

....Beguiling and soft though you seem....

"

Ghosts of the past

Restrict the future

Angry hearts without hope

Yearning for an escape

Substitute numbness for healing

Hindered spirits give way to defeat

Abyss of loss you draw them in

Release oh darkness your prey

Beguiling and soft though you seem

Oblivion is a sharp crystals edge

Reverberating echoes of death

This has been the format from hell. Does anyone else have as much trouble as I do?
Here is A little background on Grays Harbor County
Grays Harbor was the center of the Spotted Owl debate back in the 70s and 80s. The "Tree Huggers" came, protested, and caused a great deal of trouble. (Only to find out later that the owl was smarter than given credit for and moved on to other places). Government restricted and shut down logging in many areas. Being a logging community this was lethal but only the beginning of a series of problems. Next mills began to shut down and unemployment skyrocketed. Alcoholism and drug addiction began to climb, followed by higher rates of crime, spousal and child abuse, and broken homes. Grays Harbor became among the top 10 in the nation per capita for alcoholism, drug addiction and crime.

Yes acrostic format can be a challenging constrained write, but when you pull it off, the results are worth it! The emotively poignant subject matter, has been captured in an expressive and poetically creative manner.

As an added piece of information to anyone reading this; Grays Harbor was named after Captain Robert Gray who discovered and entered it on May 7, 1792 in the course of his fur-trading voyages along the north Pacific coast of North America. (Neither recognition nor wealth befell him. He died in poverty in 1806 at Charleston) Looks like the place had a sinister reputation from very early on!

Wonderful write!

Wow-this is one of the BEST acrostics I have read for both content and flow. I have never heard of Grays Harbor. Where was this located? I am by no means a history buff, so if I don't ask, I don't learn!

Your choice of wording is impeccable for this piece. Almost leaves me mesmerized. Excellent, Michelle!! :-)

I have never tried this format... but it looks really hard... you.. however.. have done an excellent job, the message is brilliantly written.
I,m not familiar with the story but you explained it perectly.... We don't give nature the credit they deserve, our fauna has been dealing with mans encroachment for years and years.... Well done too the spotted owl.

Well done

Yes, the formatting is difficult with the tools supplied, I tend to focus more on content. I did not catch the full gist of this acrostic because I am unfamiliar with the subject matter. Is Grays Harbor a painful place?

I started writing when I took journalism and wrote for the college newspaper for a year. I loved it so much that the last quarter I took it without credit. My need to write comes and goes. When it is .. more..
