Seatbelts save lives

Seatbelts save lives

A Story by Daniel Maguire

Julie was barreling down Mortimer at full speed now. Julie had never driven this fast before and she assumed she never would again

Her life could have been flashing before her eyes but she wouldn't have seen a thing because she had them tightly shut. She reasoned that she probably wasn't missing much anyway

She was waiting for the whole car to shake violently when she hit the barriers at the T-junction but the barriers barely put up a fight

Julie felt weightless as the car soared through the air and eventually began plummeting towards the ravine 50 feet below the road. Julie was stuck to the seat due to the g force like some sort of mad carnival ride

It was probably only a few brief moments but those few brief moment seemed like some of the longest in her life

Julie was thinking back to Seatle, smelling baked goods from Benny's bakery and hearing the sound of rain on the old tin rough of the school house when she was thrown forward from her seat into the glass of the Fiats front window

She regained consciousness moments later to find that the small light and surprisingly durable Fiat had become tangled in the oak trees that ran alongside the ravine and the Fiat was now dangling there like some low hanging fruit

Julie was decked out on the front windscreen, she looked down and exclaimed "s**t", in the same moment she threw her hands down angrily on the windscreen and the glass gave out from underneath her

Julie was falling once more and once more time slowed to a crawl. Why did she leave Seatle? Her Father passing had been a tough time for her but no that wasn't it. Had it been something petty and insignifficant? Ah now she remembered it was

Julie hit the water face first waves emanated from the epicentre and a few moments later the waters surface returned to its calm serene state as if nothing had happened

Minutes passed before Julie's body washed up a couple of feet Down stream from the wreckage. She seemed peaceful that was until water began to erupt from her gaping mouth as she gasped desperately for breath lurching and wreaching until her lungs had been cleared of the river water

She was on her hands and knees her wet locks dangling in front of her face when she looked back up towards the road and spotted a huge billboard on the hard shoulder

It read " Seatbelts save lives" Julie began laughing hysterically and fell over backwards onto the muddy bank of the river breathing heavily and laughing to herself intermittently
