Xerox & ZanexA Story by Daniel Maguire
The incandescent green light from the Xerox machine shone across Julie's face as she made copy after copy. What exactly she was making copies of she wasn't entirely sure. Julie felt as if she was outside herself while she worked as if she was going through the motions
This was how Julie had lived most of her life, not entirely in the drivers seat and never really feeling like she had made a conscious decision to do the things she had done She was an entirely different person from the child that changed her dreams and aspirations at least every 48 hours. Maybe it was part of being in your twenties but Julie hadn't really wanted anything in years I mean there were things she needed like her coffee in the morning and her weekly prescription but nothing she really craved or desired anymore She winced as the door of the copy place swung open and the little bell chimed. It's iritating pitch was a reminder of the monotony that was her 9 - 5. When she closed her eyes at night she could hear the persistent whirring and chugging of the Xerox machine and she leaned over to her bedside table and took another zanex Julie's friends often prompted her to put heels on and hit the town in search of a man, which was what they were convinced she needed. Even if that was what she needed, she wasn't sure if she wanted that to be the solution The car radio screamed into life "because I'm happy!". Julie firmly hit the power button on her car stereo and took a deep sigh She was approaching the t- junction of Mortimer and Pearce now, her foot fell heavily on the accelerator and in her mind she had no intention of heading either left or right © 2015 Daniel Maguire |
