Night StrangerA Story by Maniac MikeA short story told in the second person narrative.Night Stranger
It's a nice night out and you are walking the streets. You're still disappointed that you're car is in the shop and that you're carrying very little cash on you due to the high cost of the auto's repair. As you walk by you hear commotion. It's that guy who works for the crime boss. He dropped some belongings out of his bag. You see from the corner you're hiding from that they're instruments he uses to remind people to pay up while he's collecting. Big Gus was on the careless side, they told you that, as he left a big envelope stuffed with cash on top of his vintage car. As Gus was preoccupied you run by and snatch the money without Gus knowing. You keep running and running until you got to Ryan’s Tavern, that’s what you did. You opened the door and see that girl you like from class. It’s Alison Swanson. You get up the nerve to walk up to her. “Hi Alison,” you said. “Hey
you, how are you?”
After some small talk you go to a secluded spot and examine the money envelope. You’re thinking there’s a fortune in there. A lot of green. No, a whole lot of green. Now you order the fine pricey drinks and a king’s dinner so for Alison could look on, impressed. She did notice. You need a confidence booster, so you order another bottle. She’s by the pool table. You ask her out and she says she’ll play you for it. Alison wants to know what you’ll put up. One hundred bucks is the first thing out of your mouth. “Is that all a date with me is worth?” Her shiny blonde hair made you blurt out “five hundred.” After a handshake, the game began. You soon remember that you’re lousy at pool. Even I trashed you at pool and I’m horrible at pool too. It’s the middle of the game and she’s laughing at how poorly you’re playing, then you notice the TV. It’s the news. Gus is dead. You miss another shot. Gus was found with all his instruments implanted in his head. Alison made another shot. The dead body of Big Gus was found stuffed in the back of a milk truck. Alison wins the game. What if the crime boss finds out it was you? He owns that milk factory. You decide to challenge Alison to another game. You would put up another five hundred verses the one she one for you and the date. She insists you put up a thousand this time. You agree. The game ends with the same results. Suddenly, the crime boss and his goons walk in. You try to act natural. Alison was summoned by him. They know. That’s what you kept saying to yourself. She comes back and reminds you that you owe her $1,500. But, she gives you a chance to win it back and even put ten dates with her on the line. You’re afraid to leave, in case the crime guys follow you. So, you agree to her terms. Crime Boss kept watching you and Alison play pool. In your case, attempt. Baxter! As Alison makes shot after shot, you recall Crime Boss was Baxter from Baker Street when we were kids. Took you long enough. Hey, she beat you again. She looks proud of herself. You turn so for no one can see the envelope and quickly count and yank out $3,000. She’s shocked that you actually paid up. “Hey my dear, you gave an extra two hundred by mistake.”
“Get yourself some drinks, got to go.” As you left, something fell. Not the money, your phone. You snuck out the back, but, Baxter and his buddies were there and worked you over. Bloodied and beaten you were ready to confess stealing the money. “I’ll talk,” you said. “Shut it, kid,” Baxter said. “If my niece decides to go out with you, which she tells me is a strong possibility, you’d better respect her always.” He doesn’t know? You gathered. Suddenly you guys hear cars driving at top speed. Guns are firing. “Get down, kid,” Baxter yelled.
Baxter’s goons were dead. You were gasping for air. “Got to get to work, kid,” Baxter told you.
You walked
home and a
car honked. You
were startled. The
window opens. Alison
had your phone.
