English ProjectA Poem by MandyThis is literally an English project but feel free to read it if you want to.
As I look down I see Josiah's face in the eyes of that soldier.
'He's a Jap! Look at him! He's a Jap!' I was told to shoot him because he was different. I never thought war would be so horrid. I never thought I'd be so scared. I could continue with the 'I never thought...' statements but it wouldn't make a difference, all because now, I think too often. I'm different That's what the people on the reservation say. They can't talk to me because I'm different. I'm "half-breed" half-white, half-Indian, but never mind it's not actually my fault. I didn't choose to be of mixed descent. And I'm sure this man didn't choose the race he is either. I never thought war would be so horrid. I never thought I'd be so scared. I could continue with the 'I never thought...' statements but it wouldn't make a difference, all because now, I think too often. I could reminisce on the stories of my childhood, with Rocky, and Auntie, Josiah, and Old Grandma. My mother never wanted me Neither did Auntie, but Rocky was my best friend, and my cousin. He's gone now, and these stories are what keeps him alive. I never thought war would be so horrid. I never thought I'd be so scared. I could continue with the "I never thought..." statement but it wouldn't make a difference, because now I think too often So now I sit here with memories flooding in the tears fill my eyes and I know I'm going to cry, because I have finally realized the boy I grew up with, and the Uncle I desperately miss, are and will always be here with me, through everything, even the tough times but only if I keep the stories alive. © 2010 Mandy |
