Hit ParaderA Story by Mandi LuShe loved, she lost.Rain pelted the house in violent cracks, stormy weather the trend of the last few days. Tree branches raked the sides of the house, drowned out by the voices within. In the cramped living room, all that filtered in was the street light from outside. Standing as far from her as he could, fists clenched, he spoke through gritted teeth. “You promised,” he said, eyes cold as he stared into her. “You were supposed to keep your mouth shut!” “I’m sorry,” she said, “I didn’t mean to, honest! I didn’t mean to tell her anything!” He took a step towards her, and she took one back. “But you did,” he nearly growled, taking another step. Against the couch, she had nowhere to go. “I don’t see why we had to be such a secret!” she yelled now, deciding offense was the best defense. “What’s the harm in her knowing?” Unable to answer, he closed in, standing nearly against her, like many other times in past days, except this time instead of being warm, he was cold. He raised his hand and smacked her face. She fell back onto the couch, dazed, as he just stared down at her. “I loved you,” she said, holding her cheek, crying like a child. “She never will, but I did.” Turning from her, he headed for the door. She jumped up and chased after him, grabbing the door frame and staring out into the rain as it pelted down onto the melting snow. “Don’t!” she yelled, reaching a hand into the water. Stopping, he turned and looked back at her. “I trusted you,” he said, “and you broke that.” Then, with his back to her, he headed off into the rain. She pulled her hand back inside and cradled it to her chest, soaking it over her broken heart. © 2010 Mandi LuAuthor's Note
