Sweet Annie

Sweet Annie

A Poem by MandaClarine
"

My childhood friend. We both had leukemia, she did not survive but I will never forget her.

"

Sweet Annie,

We were so young, we didn’t know what normal was

We didn’t care.

We were just children with no hair

We marched up and down the hallways of that hospital floor

Until one day, your body was too sore

I don’t understand.

We have the same cancer, why is it taking her?

She told me it’s all just a blur

Then one day she was not there

How can this be fair?

Annie, do you remember when we used to steal root beer out of the doctors lounge?

I wish you were still around

I would give anything for you to be by my side just once more

You still come visit me in my dreams, only this time there is no gore

We are just children, innocent and hopeful

Until next time my sweet Annie, I will remain joyful

I wrote this when I was 8, about a year after she passed away. I still have dreams about my sweet Annie.

Thank you for sharing the poem. Poetry allowed us to remember good people and good times. Even with death she left you with good memories and time spend together. People appear in dreams to show us we need to relax, need change or to remind us we must live.

A rare level of understanding ...but the circumstances take the innocence out of childhood and you understand "things" way before you should even start to become aware of how fragile existence is.

We hold the memories close ...and closer still when we are afraid of our "nows".

Life is not often fair, especially when children don't get a chance to grow up, such a bitter sweet poem… she may have been here temporarily but she is forever a part of your life and I am sure looking down on you to make sure you are alright.

This is a very beautiful written poem. Having someone I love living with cancer is a very hard thing to see. So I can so relate to this piece. Thank you for sharing this!

thank you, she is always with me.
Powerful. My husband is a childhood cancer survivor, and he is now a stroke survivor. Your memories of Annie are so sweet and innocent. What an honoring way to keep her memory alive.
