Silver Ghosts

Silver Ghosts

A Story by Manal
"

It's a post-apocalyptic story about the struggle of the last remaining humans and the complicated relationship between two alien races who watch over Earth.

"

I watched them helplessly as they destroyed it all. 100,000 years of

technological evolution only to fall because of some silly politicians that had different points of view

which led to the launch of 10 nuclear bombs, the outcome was horrible

obviously. Only a few thousands of them live, although I wouldn't call

it living really. They wear high-tech metallic suits that were given to

them by our brethren to help them survive in a radiated environment.

They begged us to relocate them to another Earth but our rules are

strict, as much as we want to help them, we can't. The leaders think

that if any of us interfere with lesser individuals will mean that

they'll forget their mistakes and stop looking for ways to survive on

their own.

My job was to insure that their genetic code won't be lost

as they have become somewhat of an endangered species. I was asked to

go to one of their camps and take DNA samples. I arrived at the site, it

was awful, they lived in old buildings on the edge of collapsing. I

walked slowly toward an orphaned child, as I was ready to paralyze

him, he looked at me and whispered "they'll come after you". Shocked,

i left the camp area without retrieving the DNA. As I was on my way

back to the scout ship, five men carrying our guns have gathered

around me. I felt afraid for the first time in my life. I never

thought that I'd be in this situation that's why I didn't carry any

weapons on me. They handcuffed me with robes and led me to an

underground tunnel. They pushed me into a cell and locked the door. It

was wet, cold and horrifying. I waited for days but apparently they

just want me to rot in this cell, it must be their way of revenge.

It's the 26th day and I woke up on the sound of gun shots.

The cell door was opened, I was too exhausted to see who's behind it. Then

a very sharp sound made me pass out. I woke up only to find myself

laying on a bed in a large white room. I felt nostalgic for a moment

and then I remembered being here before. It was clear that it was one

of the mother ships of one of our brethren fleet. A man walked into

the room, he seemed very nervous and anxious. I knew there was

something big going on so I asked him about the situation. He asked to

escort me to the main hall where his superiors will explain everything

to me. I arrived at a large round hall with surrounding windows that

overlooked Earth, and there were twelve figures standing in the

shadows. I couldn't see their faces but they seemed like they were

smiling at me. One of them called me by my name and said "those

humans, those savages they didn't understand the meaning of the word

no, and now they're taking their ignorance to the extreme." it was in

that moment that I realized a war was going to start, and the outcome

was very obvious. So I looked at the twelve figures, I smiled and I

said "why do you think we're here? Weren't we once savages? Didn't we

destroy our home-planets because of our constant hatred? Didn't we beg

and humiliated ourselves for some food? Didn't we joined each other

for the sake of helping unfortunate race like we were?". He paused for

two minutes and said "rules are rules, we can't and we won't change

them."

That was when I decided to abandon the fleet and work with

human rebels. I knew that I would die either way. If I joined the

humans, I'd be killed by my people, or I would be executed for

treason. I exited the hall and walked toward the docking bay. The

gates of the bay were locked, so being a scientist I had some

knowledge of computers. I hacked the gate and went to the nearest

military scout ship. I took off and set a course to Earth. I arrived

30 minutes later and went to look for the humans. I looked up and all

I could think of was how this beautiful planet was, and what it would

be like when the humans die. I walked for a while before I could see

the smoke rising in the distance. I had a strange feeling, like I

shouldn't be here. I decided to continue walking toward the smoke. My

feelings were right after all, it was dark but I could smell the

decayed corpses, I felt sick to my stomach.

But I kept walking,

looking for any signs of life. I found a woman hiding behind a large

container, i asked her how this has happened and she said, "apparently

you damn aliens thought it was a good idea to use live shooting

targets!" . I explained my situation and she seemed to believe my

story, so she decided to escort me to the bomb shelter where the

survivors might hide in. The cold feeling of steel on my neck sent

chills down my spine, the man who held the knife was shaking, fearing

that I might attempt to harm him. After convincing him, he let go of

the knife and walked with me into the shelter. That's where I've found

a small group of rebels, waiting to live without fear. We said our

goodbyes and opened the large metal gate, knowing that death awaits

us. We ventured into the jungles of old cities. We clenched our guns

and prayed for freedom. We heard the first gunshot and ran into cover.

Time seem so slow in the battlefield, I felt the souls of dead

comrades. I've seen what they have seen, felt what they have felt. I

was born as an alien, and I'll die as a human. I've seen my life pass

in front of me, I've seen what I could have done, what could have

accomplished. One of my own people have shot me, I didn't feel any

pain, I was freed. My name was Alaje, and this was my story.

I must say for you to say that it has some grammar mistakes, I only found quit a few. I'm impressed with your writing. I mean, it doesn't have much depth to the story, but I expected it to be that way. It's a short story, anyway. I'm interested in what kind of world it is. Maybe you'll write more? :D
