A Billion Lights

A Billion Lights

A Poem by Malen

Take me downtown to see the lights
Electric pulses invite.
Fast moving automobiles
Mankind's pride in steel.

Spinning head around
Vastly moving sound.
Headlights flyby crowds.
Illumination rebounds.

Luminescent signals, bleating.
On our feet, speeding.
Recklessly through organized form
A red light impeding.

Rising energy ensues
Developing attitude.
Something in these city streets
Keeps our hearts beating.

High on sight
Towering in might
Colorful lights
Reaching refractions.

Pulsing vibes, keeping rhyme
Energizing nightly crowds.
Laughter boundlessly cries out
One more drink now?

Inside losing heads
Remaining out here instead.
Looking up and out to see,
The night-light lit in stead
of what brings them dread.

A correlation to heaven.
A place we once dwelled in.
Reminiscently captures me,
A recipient, Joyously.

Lost are souls in the night,
Stumbling through until twilight.
Drinks excusing their heads,
For truths they may have said.

On city streets, long in the night,
Finding lost insight.
Reminders of where we've been.
For once, I can see heaven.

Behind the lights, they lit in fear,
Of what may meet them walking here.
Clung to phone, racing home,
Returning to their night-light dome.

Past the fleeting fears,
Electric nights and cheers.
Beyond their bright obsessions,
Forgetting mornings lesson.
Find me here
Staring through
their night-light reflections.

The city looked above gets me into an "empire state of mind," making me feel humble against the tall skyscrapers, but at the same time makes me feel brave and ambitious, that I can make anything happen for myself. The city during the night makes me feel wild and free and full of motion...and entranced of all the different light like those from a Christmas tree. Yes, sometimes it is nice to visit the city, but not too often. It does have a negative effect on some overtime...that pressuring fastness like you always have to be on a roll...it's suffocating. I enjoyed this. It was full of color.
