Give Me The ChanceA Poem by Danny Mahlon Underwood
2004 DANNY MAHLON UNDERWOOD
I KNOW YOU HAD YOUR PAIN; AND YOUR CROSS TO BEAR. THOUGH IT WOULD NOT HAVE CHANGED YOUR MIND; I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE BEEN THERE. SUICIDE IS A COP OUT; SO, SOME PEOPLE SAY. I THINK IT TAKES QUITE A MAN; TO TAKE HOLD OF YOUR OWN FATE. TO LOOK GOD IN THE EYE; READY OR NOT, HERE I COME. I DON’T BLAME YOU OR THE WORLD; AND CERTAINLY NOT THE GUN. YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD SPARE ME THE AGONY; OF WATCHING YOU LEAVE THIS EARTH. YOU UNDERESTIMATED THE PRICE; OF YOUR OWN SELF-WORTH. YOU MEANT MORE TO ME; THAN ANYONE BEFORE. I WISH YOU WOULD HAVE CALLED ME; BEFORE KNOCKING ON HEAVEN’S DOOR. IT WOULD HAVE HURT ME SO; AND DEFINITELY MADE ME CRY. BUT AT LEAST I WOULD HAVE HAD THE CHANCE; TO TELL YOU I LOVE YOU AND SAY GOODBYE. THE CHOICE WAS YOURS ALONE; NOT FOR ME TO JUDGE. I DON’T LOVE YOU ANY LESS; NOR, DO I HOLD A GRUDGE. YOUR LIFE IS NOW OVER; MINE, IT MUST LIVE ON. EMPTINESS FILLS MY HEART; NOW THAT YOU ARE GONE. IF EVER WE MEET AGAIN; DON’T LEAVE ME IN THIS WAY. AT LEAST GIVE ME THE CHANCE; TO SAY WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.
