The SilenceA Poem by Danny Mahlon Underwood2003 DANNY MAHLON UNDERWOOD THE SILENCE
THE SILENCE IS DEAFENING; THOUGH THERE ISN’T A SOUND. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CEMETERY; IN OUR LITTLE TOWN.
A GENTLE BREEZE CAPTURES MY ATTENTION; AS THOUGH CALLING MY NAME. SURROUNDED BY DEATH; YET FULL OF LIFE JUST THE SAME.
THEIR FACES I’VE NOT SEEN; YET I KNOW EVERYONE; THIS IS THE FATHER, HERE IS THE MOTHER; AND THAT IS THEIR SON.
MOST OF THEM STRANGERS; BROUGHT TOGETHER BY FATE. TO LIVE HERE IN ETERNITY; WITHOUT VIOLENCE AND WITHOUT HATE.
AS I STARE AT THE STONES; THAT MARK THEIR FINAL HOMES. I’LL ALL BY MYSELF; YET I’M HARDLY ALONE.
THE WIND PICKS UP; AS THE ANGELS SING. I TALK TO THE SPIRITS; WITHOUT SAYING A THING.
I COME HERE FOR GUIDENCE; SERENITY AND A CLEAR HEAD. I COME HERE TO FEEL ALIVE; AND TO HONOR THE DEAD.
THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN; NOR WILL THEY EVER BE. OTHERS WILL COME VISIT; OTHERS LIKE ME.
THEY HELP US LIVE ON; YET CONNECT US TO THE PAST. WE’LL MEET IN THE FUTURE; FOR LIFE EVERLAST.
