Care

Care

A Story by Roderick J. Lizardo
"

Care

"

Never again, shall the sun rule the sky.

"Hey wake up! Its time, lets go!"

Orphans and poor kids alike had smiles
and excitement in their faces.

The small boy lead them here... "There it is!"

They stopped. It's as if they had been waiting
for this their entire lives. They walked slowly
towards their treasure chest with eager
anticipation.

As they open the lid of the trash can, the
first thing noticed was the smell of bile,
then the old moldy coffee filer, the used
tampons, and discusting Q-Tips.

Going deeper into the trash, he said:

"See! What'd I tell ya?! Jack pot!"

An old discusting half eating turkey.

"Happy Thanksgiving boys!"

After searching for anything else that was
digestable, the five kids took what
seemed to be a symbol of victory
and celebration back to their alley.

It was raining pretty hard. The water
clampered onto the streets like ringing
sounds of dropping coins.

Johnny carried it tightly like it was his own
child.

It was cold, but not cold enough to snow.
The peircing cold air scraped the back of their
throats, as if millions of tiny knives were
breathed in.

As they had reached their destination, a dozen
kids awaited them and cheered.

"Johnny! Oh my God, you did it!"

"Wow that thing is huuuuge!"

"I knew he'd find something!"

As each kid got in line, one by one
tore a piece of their modly idol.

One small piece for each boy.

After they had all got one, they looked at
each other and yelled:

"Happy Thanksgiving!"

And ate the crusty turkey.

Johnny ate his piece too.

The taste of marinated coffee and mold
was the taste of celebration in its own
quirky way.

Despite the thought of salmonella and food
poisoning he had not cared.

Boosting the morale of those
Who had no idea of what hope meant
Was the first time he had experienced it.

They celebrated, laughed and joked.

After today, Johnny knew where he stood
amongst the world.

The epiphany he had had made sense.

What he had saw was just priceless.
He knew from then on, the world is
going to be a better place. Not because
of some lucky half eaten turkey either..

He was quiet, sitting in his place.

Imagining and envisaging a better
thanksgiving next year. With a real
turkey in a nice warm place, all just
for those kids.

Despite his clear sense of satisfaction he did
not even have a smirk on his face. He did not
even speak a word.

He got up and left the alley.

The ten year old boy walked the
streets alone.

The boy had a solid stare, focused on one image.
He zoned out, imagined good things for himself,
those kids, and every other kid on this earth.

As he walked in the rain with no umbrella all by
himself, he looked at the different houses.

Beautiful homes...

He saw a particular one. A really big one up the hill.

"This is it." He spoke to himself.

As he found a window in clear sights of a family, he saw
adults. Watching TV and drinking their hot chocolates.

As if this is what he desired in the future, he smiled.

For the first time he smiled.

As he walked around the house, he climbed
the intimidating stairs which had the front awaiting
him.

As he had reached the front door he stood there,
thinking about those kids

With deterimination he wished that he could
have gave them something better.

He knew those boys were going
to be okay...

He knew they were going to have
a better thanksgiving next year...

He knew the world will be waiting
for him...

Then...

He opened the unlocked door,
walked in and said.

"Hi mom! Hi Dad!"

Wow. This is powerful. The idea that one ten year old boy could care enough to help the poor unfortunate kids on the streets, when he had everything he could have asked for.. This story speaks wonders, and really makes the reader think and reflect apon their own life. Even if it is just fiction. Thank you for sharing, keep up the good work!
