Dream

Dream

A Story by Annabelle N.
"

This very short story kind of wrote itself after an intense dream I had

"

Fear gripped her as she paced back and forth in an unfamiliar bedroom. He was out there waiting for her, waiting to marry her. She looked down and saw that she was no longer dressed in casual clothes, instead she wore a wedding dress. She looked at herself in the mirror next to her, her fear spiking once more as she took in the classic white gown with a matching sheer veil flowing down her back. She was at her wedding, how was she at her wedding.  Her heart quickened as her father and entourage entered the room. Tears sprung to her eyes, flowing freely down her cheeks as she fought their grip guiding her out and yelled that she wasn’t ready, that she couldn’t do this. Emotions threatened to consume her, blacking out her vision and choking her breath. Just when she thought she couldn’t take a single second more, a quick but powerful realization dawned on her. She was dreaming. And though the realization did not last long enough for her to gain control of the dream, it allowed her to relax and realize that she was not truly dooming the man she loved to a life with her forever. Instead it was only a dream that she should enjoy. So the story played on and she walked down the aisle toward his familiar, but faded face.

The ceremony itself continued in a blur of half spoken words that ended halfway when he pulled her down the aisle and into the world to kiss her his away from the prying eyes of the assembled friends and family. She smiled and laughed as the aforementioned party of people flooded the courtyard with half-hearted arguments against the lover’s nontraditional act. And so the party began, seen in flashes full of laughter and stolen kisses. A champagne glass in one hand, the other wrapped around his neck as she settles into her seat on his lap and  laughs deeply at an unheard joke. She continues to see flashes of the night, his smile that shines in his bright happy eyes, golden lights strung above their heads, guests talking and laughing. The feelings accompanying the images were overwhelming, joy and contentedness flooding her system as she let herself relax completely into her environment.

Yet through it all she woke with a lingering fear of what this would mean if it were true, the loss she has and will continue to suffer in order to protect him. If only it were as easy as dreams made it seem.

Had the feel of realness and great stress. Dreams are warnings. I tell people. Pay attention to them. Thank you for sharing the powerful tale.
