Plagiarsm vs copyright infringement

Plagiarsm vs copyright infringement

A Story by Mad Dog Wilson

Going over the difference and what impact it could have on you

"

I have been hearing about a disturbing trend lately - Writers on this and other sites having thier work illegally copied. They have been calling plagiarism. I have been doing some studying and found out that what has been going on is the far more serious legal issue of copyright infringement.

To go over the differences I am referencing an article on Plaguiarism.com. In the article it states:

"PLAGIARISM: the use of someone else' s work without giving proper credit - a failure to site adequately."

This is usually when a student downloads work from the internet or uses books or other media and turns it in as their own work.

"COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT: This is the use of someone else's creative work - this includes a song, video clip, a photograph and other creative works without authorization of compensation - if compensation is warranted."

the article also explains the OTHER difference:

"Schools enforce Plagiarism"

"Courts enforce Copyright Infringement"

Reference:

Plagiarism vs.Copyright Infringement: Is copying Illegal:

http://www.plagiarismchecker.com/plagiarism-vs-copyright.php

The site also has a free plagiarism checker.

One last note: While this is a large site and difficult to enforce: Chuckie and this administrative staff should take SOME steps to protect the members and institute some measures: Such as a zero tolerance policy against copyright infringement or he may be liable himself for having an enviornment conducive to letting copyright infringement go unchecked. Think about it Chuckie

Like Blackbirdsong - I had to laugh at Chuckie lol

I agree that what is going on is more copyright infringement - but there is a lot involved - not to mention attorney costs - for an individual to actually pursue this avenue. I am not sure how copyright is actually treated here either - once posted, do you hold that copyright? Or is it more a matter of you must have it registered, as I would gather most do not. All things that should be considered and checked out. I think though - that there should be a policy for this site - as Blackbirdsong states - a zero tolerance - no warnings, etc - once discovered you should be banned - by IP address- from here. I'm sure there are many ways of dealing with this problem - yet it seems there is nothing being done at all.

Edit:

Thank you, Nightstalker! That is good information to have on hand :)

Thanks for your input, Bright eyes.

To answer your question - according to Wikipedia - Once a person publishes an article online, such as here on the Writer's Cafe - it is considered copyrighted, even thought it doesn't have the copyright symbol or stated by the author of the article.

here is the address:

Chuckie LOL

Yes there should be a zero tolerance policy so not only could members feel protected, but also those who have plagiarized others will know that they just can't go around doing as they please without facing some sort of discipline. Frankly I think anyone caught doing this should be banned from this site immediately.

Well, you are right. I visited the website you recommended. I have read there; a perfect website for this is www.plagiarism.org

However, I wonder that not you nor anybody else except Helena seems to be bothered; I introduced to WC a clear case of plagiarism ( my text: PLAGIARISM II. )

What does it say? My answer: Read my text DECEIT. Just posted.

ciao
