More than Earth

More than Earth

A Poem by AmeliaGerhardt

I had always believed in the universe
beyond our planet
But it wasn't until
I had found you
that I was welcomed
to the exposure of the
beauty within its
depths.

Looking into your eyes,
I found a brand new cosmos.
Never had I witnessed
such vibrancy and life
within an iris.
Never had the contrast
between a dappled blue
and a piceous black
been able to draw me in
like a black hole
centering the milky way.

Studying your movement,
the way gravity worked
as a force in your favor,
reminded me of the
weightlessness your touch
gifted me with.
For the first time,
I felt the difference between
Earth's pull and the attractions
beyond her surface.

Among all of God's wondrous
creations, you were my favorite art.
The need to trace each
freckle placed upon your skin
like constellations in the night sky
ran through my blood.
A masterpiece
constructed by the Helios
in which our planet thrives from,
and I
so lucky for allowance
to not only observe,
but to touch as well.

The obsession with life beyond
our planet grew,
as you gave me a life
I knew could not be comparable
to anything here on Earth.
I continued to chase the galaxies in your eyes,
the suns in your smile,
for what felt like eternity.
It became evident that
the time we had created on Earth
was not equivalent to the timing
space had given herself.
Each minute I spent lost in your eyes
lead to years of my life
in perspective.
Like I had spent so long
with you by my side,
even if reality had only
granted us a short time together.
I knew I had left our atmosphere
when a lack of oxygen within my lungs
was the only explanation I could ploy
as to how you took my breath away.

How could I believe you to be human when
you had shown me everything
that the men in my life were not?

How could I be content with my life on
Mother Earth
when I had experienced the
allurement of the vast life surrounding her?

You
allowed me to reach
the parts of space that
scientists had only dreamt of going.
You created history
without even trying.
