Lesson Learned

Lesson Learned

A Poem by AmeliaGerhardt

I stare at the beauty of an open fire
and you tell me not to touch it
Because you've been burned by the flames before,
but I haven't
You can tell me 110 times not to touch the fire.
You can even show me the scars
from the burns you've received.
But until I feel the burn on my own skin,
until I am tortured by the heat
and my own skin is scarred,
I will never stop wondering
what its like to be kissed by the flames
