Chapter Three

“We’ve got to find somewhere to stay Reece,” Madeline demanded, “my feet are sore, and I’m tired, and I just want to lie down!”

“We’ll I’m sorry Madeline, but I haven’t thought about where to stay yet. We need somewhere that is private and we don’t need to worry about people seeing us. The last thing we need is for someone to call the cops.” He replied to her.

She stuck her tongue out at him. He just glared at her, and kept walking. As the sun was starting to set down over the horizon an idea came to him.

“I know where we can go, and it’s not that far from here! It’s in the park, its nice and quiet, no one knows where it’s at!” He said as his face brightened up.

They quickly started heading towards the park. As he could see the park coming into view he noticed that the last of the late night love strollers were heading home. As he lead her to this big oak tree that he would sit at whenever he would sneak out of the house to clear his thoughts.

“You expect me to sleep here Reece, really?” She asked him with a hint of sarcasm.

“You never change do you my dear?” he started to chuckle, “It’s the best I can do for now. This is our own little secret spot so you can’t tell anyone!” he told her with his finger pointed out towards her.

“Yea, yea, yea! Hey give me your jacket!” She said with a big smile on her face.

“Why do you want it?” Reece said slightly hesitating as he took off his jacket and handed it to her.

“I need a pillow!” She said as she grabbed the jacket out of his hands.

He just sat there, stunned, with his mouth wide open. As she lay down, he just watched her drift off to sleep. Knowing that for the first time they could sleep without having to worry about their father hurting either one of them just put a smile on Reece’s face. He now had to start planning on what he was going to do in order to get them better situated.

He reached into his back pocket, and counted only thirty dollars. He knew that there was no way that was going to be able to be enough to keep them going for long. He tried to think of other alternatives. Now the realization of what all was going on, and what the effects of his choices could lead them into was finally setting in to him. What if he couldn’t take care of her, what if everything he had done was more than he could do? All the questions of uncertainty were starting to get to him, causing him to start to panic.

Tears started running down his face; even though he knew he was free from his father and mother the real problems of taking on the world started to scare him. Reece got up and quietly walked away from the tree trying to be as quiet as he could so he wouldn’t wake up Madeline. As soon as he got far enough away he knelt down.

“Dear God, I know that you up there listening to me. I’m not sure what all I’ve done to make you so upset. Life has been one tribulation after another. You know what our parents have done to us, and you know they weren’t going to stop. I had to bring Madeline out of that house! It was my only other option. Look I really need your help now; a lot more than I’ve needed it in awhile. I don’t have that much money, and I’m not sure how much sleeping outside she can take. I ask that you do me one favor, and that’s will you please watch over her. Don’t worry about me just please make sure that she will be ok. Amen.”

With that he rose back to his feel, and crept back over to where his little sister was laying. He could tell that she was finally in a deep slumber, and hoping that she was dreaming of the life she will hopefully have one day. He looked up in the sky, and saw the moon and stars twinkling as if everything in the world was peaceful, and nothing was wrong.

“Man are you guys wrong.” He whispered.

Afraid that he might have awoken Madeline he looked down at her. She was still asleep with her head resting on the pillow that her brother had given her. She had her little teddy bear right by her side, cuddling with it. She never let the bear out of her sight. Reece had bought it for her after the first time their father hit her. He told her that the bear would always protect her even if he wasn’t there.

He started to think about dozing of to sleep, but thoughts about people seeing them, and coming up to them kept him up. He was used to having nights that he didn’t sleep well, and even the nights where we would stay up all night just to make sure she was ok. She was more to him then just his little sister she was his world, and everything that he stood upon. If it wasn’t for her, he probably wouldn’t have been able to go this far.

As the stars shone above them his eye lids started to get heavy.

“Just a few minutes, and then right back up.” He told himself.

Soon he found himself dreaming about the world in which they used to live in, and the one that he hopes to provide his younger sister with the freedom that she deserves to have in order to grow up. Soon he drifted off to sleep.

As he woke up hours later to the sun beating him in the face he had to squint to see around. His hands started to feel around him until his eyes adjusted to the light. He stood up and stretched soon he found himself rubbing his eyes. His back was sore from the way he was laying. When he looked down to where Madeline was laying he realized that she way gone. She was no longer lying down beside him. Panic overwhelmed him fast, but he knew he couldn’t cause a commotion in case they were to come back there.

He scurried out of the bushes with everything in his hands. He looked around but didn’t see her.

“I shouldn’t have fallen asleep.” He silently said to himself.

He sat down on a bench and started to softly cry. The tears streaming down his face he couldn’t hold them back anymore. He didn’t know who to turn to, or if he could even turn to everyone. He couldn’t go to the cops because after they found them they would be forced to go back home. He tried to regain himself as he stood up, and knew he had to find her and quickly.
