Chapter One

Loud foot steps. Every step getting closer. Screaming from the rooms. A little girl lost within her own thoughts. Trapped. She searches for a way to get out. The door is locked. Foot steps getting louder. She grabs her stuffed animal. She searches through her room for a place to hide. Nothing. Silence breaks the room. Tears streaming down her face. She runs to her closet, and swings open the door. She scurries in, and slams the door shut. Leaning against the door; praying to God for help. A heavy knock from her room door. She lets out a scream. Praying harder she hears the door swing open. Frightened. The closet door knob is starting to turn. She pushes against the door. After a three minute struggle the door swing opens. She screams at the top of her lungs.

As she wakes up screaming; her brother rushes into the room and hugs her.

            “Are you ok?” He asks.

“Do I look ok?!” She replies with such a scared tone.

He holds her close, and doesn’t let her go.

“Everything is ok. I am here now, and I won’t let anything happen to you.” Her brother keeps saying trying to keep her calm.

She continues to cry just letting the tears fall from her face. He keeps trying to calm her down. As she finally settles back into bed, and falls asleep he gets up, and sits in the chair that had been passed down from generation to generation in their family. There are a few tears streaming down his face now. It’s hard for him to see his little sister scared in such a way that she can’t even escape it in her dreams. His sadness started to build into anger. Finally he couldn’t take it anymore. As he got up he left his sisters room as quietly as he could.

“Brother where are you?” Madeline asked from down the hall. “I know you’re here somewhere!”

She continued to search the house until she went into her room and looked around. As she was looking in a hurry she spotted two sock covered feet sticking out from the blinds on her windows.

“Ah I hate this game,” she said as she crept towards the window, “I can never seem to win or even come close. I’m just about to give up.”

She was finally near the window as she leaped, and grabbed a hold of the curtain. When she finally stood back up she realized that no one was there. It was just two socks filled with toilet paper. As soon as she had seen what it was she heard an uncontrollable laugh come from her closet. She walked over to the door, and opened it up as fast as she could. Her brother, Reece, fell from inside with tears coming off his face from how hard he was laughing.

“Ugh you know I hate it when you do that! I could have hurt myself you know!” She said with anger.

As she rose to her feet they both heard a distinct sound heading toward there way. Reece hurried up, and dashed to the window. As he peered out he saw a car driving down the road nearing the house.

“Go to your room, and lock the door!” Reece said with a demanding tone. He could see that the car was slightly rocking; as if the driver couldn’t keep it in a straight line.

“Why?” Madeline said more nervous now that her brother was raising his tone at her.

“Just go!” He said. Except this time his tone raised even another level.

She realized what all was going on, and she scurried down the stairs to get her belongings. Reece followed right behind her, and stopped in front of the door and locked it. Madeline got her final stuff together; with her teddy bear in her arms; and ran back up the stairs into the security of her room.

“Jesus, we need you now.” Reece said softly.

When he peered back out of the window downstairs he saw that the car was pulling in. It nudged into the garage, and came to an abrupt stop. As he couldn’t make out the figure sitting behind the wheel he just prayed that it wasn’t his dad. Soon the car door swung open, and a big burly man stepped out of the car, and slammed the car door behind him. He took a few steps towards the house, but soon lost his balance and toppled over into the yard.

Reece knew he didn’t have much time till his father reached the front door, and all hell would break loose. He ran upstairs, and headed down the hallway. He gave the special knock on Madeline’s door, and she opened it with greeting arms.

“Is it dad?” Madeline said softly.

“Yes,” Reece answered, “and he’s been drinking.”

Madeline knew what had happened before, and ran into her closet and locked it from the inside just like Reece had set it up a month ago. As she sat against the door holding her teddy bear in her arms; rocking back and forth. All the nightmares she had been facing seemed to be coming true every time their dad came home.

Reece headed out the bedroom door, and down the stairs. He hoped that maybe this time when his dad walked through the door that he would be happier, and gentle. As Reece looked out the window to get a location on his dad he heard a loud crash coming from the kitchen.

            The back door!

Reece was in such a hurry to make sure that Madeline would have been safe that he forgot to lock the back door in the kitchen. Reece knew from the sound of the crash that this was not going to be what he had hoped for. Reece ran upstairs, and did like his younger sister had done. He ran down the hallway as fast as he could, and swung open his bedroom door. As he closed the door, he grabbed an office chair that he had, and placed it under the door handle.

Reece then did as he always does, and curled up in his bed as he placed his head on his pillow he seemed to start to get tired.

All was safe. He thought to himself. Madeline and I are both safe. And with that final thought he drifted off to sleep.

Very, very good! I was, like, completely pulled into the story. There were only a few punctiation and grammatical errors and i think once you called Reece "Jason". that was a bit confusing but it was very well written!
