Chapter (1) WHAT LEGACY FOR DREAMS ?

Chapter (1) WHAT LEGACY FOR DREAMS ?

A Chapter by MAD ENGLISHMAN

What Legacy for Dreams?

Sunday morning and the sky is once again grey,

Opening my eyes I see the photo on the chest of drawers,

It cheers me as I lay, my head full of thoughts.

My son, a baby in his bath, happy and innocent.

His mind, open to learning, eyes bright like his future.

He’s a father now, me a grandfather, so proud, but I worry so.

This new born child, will he know, the joys of watching cotton wool clouds

float across a summer sky.

They tell me of a new cloud, one, no one can see.

I remember the joy, of my little boy,

chasing elephants and bears across a dappled sky,

white wisps morphing into fishes.

This new world, with its cloud unseen,

does it make the small child to dream, to believe in wishes.

In my home I have shelves full of books, some read, some read in part,

Some to give knowledge, some to fill the mind,

some just to please the heart,

some to hold in my lap and wonder at a world I’ll never see.

Today kids have a phone and an App, its an amazing thing, apparently.

But for me, a book can make my heart sing.

To hold the knowledge, the words in my hands.

I feel it, real, as I peel back the pages.

Yes I worry about this newborn child and the world he will inherit.

Does he merit the the absurdity, the folly and the greed of our generation?

Does he need to grow up in a world of pixelled Wifi and degradation?

Of course these are questions rhetorical,

He will learn the facts historical,

in school,

on a screen,

from a cloud,

unseen.

I agree with your thoughts and your logic my friend.

The above lines are true. It is sad our children must learn life isn't so sweet and easy. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.
