HAVE YOU SEEN MY QUACK Chapter (3)A Chapter by MAD ENGLISHMANHAVE YOU SEEN MY QUACK? Chapter (3) The following morning the little duckling set off down the river once more hoping to find The Old Owl who lived in the old water mill. He didn’t know how far it would be so on the way he continued to look for his quack. He looked under clumps of weed, he looked under old logs, he looked in the bramble bushes and behind old tree stumps, but he still couldn’t find his quack. The Little Duckling had been so busy looking for his quack he hadn’t noticed that many days had now passed. The river flowed gently onward and soon the little duckling was a long long way from Apple Tree Farm. The river was getting deeper and the land on each side became flatter. There were fields of golden corn swaying in the summer breezes and he could no longer see the high hillsides of the valley. One sunny morning duckling found some particularly tasty dandelion leaves on the bank of the river and he was enjoying his breakfast when a squeaky voice interrupted him. “Excuse me.” Said the voice. Duckling looked up but he couldn’t see anyone. “I’m down here.” Said the tiny voice. Duckling looked down near to the water’s edge and saw a small brown furry face with whiskers and two black eyes staring back at him. “Oh hello. I’m Duckling Mallard, who are you?” Asked the duckling. The little brown face said. “I’m Mr Water Vole and I live inside the riverbank so will you please stop eating the roof of my house.” “Oh dear me.” Said Duckling. “I didn’t know these weeds were part of your house. I’m sorry.” The little Vole scrambled out of the water and sat by the little duckling. “Well actually those weeds are not very important anyway. I’ve not seen you on this part of the river before. Are you lost?” The little duckling stopped eating Vole’s roof and said. “I’m looking for my quack. Have you seen my quack?” The Water Vole thought for a moment, then quick as flash he dived back into the water and disappeared. “Well how rude.” Thought the little duckling. “He never even said goodbye.” Then just as quickly as he’d disappeared the vole returned and this time there were two of them. “This is Mrs Vole.” Squeaked the Vole. “I thought she might know where to find your quack.” The Little duckling introduced himself and the two Voles climbed out of the water and sat by The Little Duckling. “I’m afraid I don’t know much about quacks. Do you know what it looks like?” Asked Mrs Vole. The Little Duckling told her he’d never seen one but he knew it was very loud. The three little animals spent the morning together exploring the riverbank but they couldn’t find any sign of duckling’s quack. In the afternoon The Little Duckling said his goodbyes and set off once again along the river in search of his quack. As the sun was setting The Little Duckling found a warm spot amongst some nettles and settled down to sleep. © 2016 MAD ENGLISHMAN |
