When you were small I watched over you

The day you fell from your new bicycle

I fell too.

Throughout your growing years

I followed you and I watched your tears.

You have grown strong with me by your side

And I

I am filled with pride.

 

Darker times, there have been a few

When I could not always be there for you.

And yet you've grown tall and strong

And I

was happy just to tag along.

 

To be with you is my daily task

more I do not seek and I would not ask.

To support your steps is my lifes joy

And now you're grown

No longer just a boy

 

Through your eyes I see the world.

I place my feet where your feet tread.

We dance, but never we two, alone.

We walk but never a word between us spoken

It is a lifelong bond that can never be broken.

 

I cannot be more to you than what I am,

I stand beside you in good times and bad

I laugh silent when you are happy

And I cry silent when you are sad.

 

You show no sign of knowing I follow you,

You acknowledge not my presence nor my being

So often you've looked

And never seeing

the one true friend from birth to death.

A friend that never took a breath.
