Journals of a Southern Gentle Man (Part3)A Story by Mackenzie Brookea history projectDear Journal
May 9th 1864
Today was a proud moment in my life as a soldier, but a low point as being a simple Christian man from Ireland. While battling the Yankee opponent today in front of The Spotsylvania Court house today I did something that shall haunt my mortal being for all my days in this life. Yankee General John Sedgwick was wide in the open, so I lifted my musket and pulled the trigger.
I know that men haven fallen because of me before, but I never experienced death before like I have when I saw Sedgwick fall of his horse and land in a pool of his own blood.
General Lee himself praised me for my “good work” but why is there a whole slowly growing larger in my heart.
P.S. sent a letter to Annabelle today, told her a few names I would like to name our baby girl. © 2012 Mackenzie Brooke |
