My Oaken Friend

My Oaken Friend

A Poem by Dave
"

My first serious poem. I wrote it for a girl that later became my girlfriend, but I believe that there are lots of "solitary oaks" waiting to be discovered by someone willing to look past the vast forest of pine trees.

"

This summer, I discovered a solitary oak hidden

among the pines where I walk.

I now had something to look forward to

during my otherwise meaningless trek.

As fall approached, I lingered more often

in the vicinity of my oaken friend.

No pine could ever hope to compete

with my friend's colorful flourish!

Harsh, wintry times.

Old cuts.

Twisted branches.

Stupid lumberjerks!

Spring will be coming soon.

New leaves are born to hide behind.

Outgrow the encroaching pines and

allow yourself to be seen!

I'm not in the habit of creating new words, but what did you think of my use of the word "lumberjerks" in this poem?

lucky girl who you wrote for
poem was enough for her
to become your girlfriend

lucky girl she was
to be the girlfriend
of such a poet

would lumberjacks
be a word if there
were no jacks

words are of a living
language to change
jacks to jerks

be fitting the change
poets should be the ones
that words are created
