It
was nearly time
And
though all I owned-every dime
Was
set upon the table-
My
face was calm, I watched my palm
-and
my hand was very stable
And
when I spoke, to hide my fears
I
made another joke
Cuz
in one turn, we all would learn
If
I would ride that fateful boat
And
the German bloke- who’s ticket wrote
My
passage out of here
Had
laid it down, the previous round
He’d
had too many beers
Silent-
I drew another card
Violent-
my heart leapt
Perhaps
a little hard
For
I knew right away
As
I looked upon my hand
That
today was my lucky day
I
quickly began to stand
I
slammed it down and all around
The
people jump and shout
For
the ticket was mine, but I was low on time
And
it was quickly running out!
“The
boat will leave, out to sea
In
just another minute!”
I
had to run, with what I’d won
Or
it would sail without me in it!
I
grabbed the tickets, and ran there with it
I
knew I couldn’t wait
Finally,
I soon would see
Me
home back in the States!
I
jumped and screamed,
“Hey
wait for me!”
My
tickets in my hand
My
smile beamed
As
I did see
The
waiting ticket man
“You’re
just in time, and welcome sir aboard”
I
smiled wide, and stepped inside
As
the ship was no longer moored
I
can’t believe, I’m back at sea
And
soon I’ll be back at home
It’s
been too long, that I’ve been gone
Traveling
the world alone
The
ship itself, was made of wealth
I’d
never seen a thing so grand
As
I walked across, the receding docks
Disappeared
with the land
The
whole city had come- it so did seem
To
watch the ship depart
For
its maiden voyage, the ship of dreams
Had
only begun to start
I
waved and yelled and said farewell
Though
there was no there for me
But
I didn’t care, I still did yell
As
we drifted off to sea
“Goodbye!
I’ll miss you, make sure to always write!”
I
knew it sound absurd
But
soon the city was out of sight
With
no having heard a word
I
settled in, I found my room
My
heart still beating fast
I
was almost home, I’d be there soon
In
America, at last!
On
the upper decks, the rich now slept
In
rooms lined with gold
I
could only think, if this ship would sink
The
treasure the sea would hold
I
knew now, there was a reason
They
called it the ship of dreams
For
with all my seasons
Never
had I ever seen
Across
any land
A
beautiful ship, such as this
The
largest built by man
On
every floor, behind every door
Thousands
of people dreamed
Of
a better life, free of strife
Where
everything now seemed
To
promise you, that you can do
Whatever
it is you seek
Where
the poor at last, and the lower class
Can
rise above their meek-
Beginnings
Where
fortune and fame
Is
theirs to gain, and up for the winnings!
But
to me at least, I did not seek
What
others had left to find
I
was returning home, after years alone
I’d
left so much behind
I
thought of this, as I sat
Upon
the deck, and in my lap
I
drew upon a pad
A
picture of a father, and in his arms
-He
carried a tiny lad
I
sketched him there, drawing with my charcoal
And
on that day, I saw far away
The
girl who sought my soul
On
the upper deck, she stared upon
The
ocean and the sun
But
of the beauty, those both did have
I
knew there was only one
For
neither the sun or the sea
Could
ever hope to compare
To
the girl, I there did see
With
the fire in her hair
“I’m
sorry, lad, you must be mad
You’ll
never have a chance.”
My
buddy said, shaking his head
But,
I was stuck in a trance
“They
call this ship, the ship of dreams
So
maybe we will see.”
I
whispered to myself.
“Men
like us, can only lust
After
such women who come from wealth.”
He
so replied, hearing my whispered words.
But
I will die, if I lie
I
prayed for something absurd
I
prayed to God, hoping he’d demand it
That
love would find, and she’d be mine
Upon
the great Titanic.
