Silent Shadows

Silent Shadows

A Poem by Hamish McIndlister

How still the silent shadows lay,

Pooled under full moon's light.

How lovely, dark and decedent

Is this deep, eternal night.

The silence that surrounds me
Is velvety, deep and green.
It is both cold and comforting
Like a scene from a familiar dream.

A dream which haunts my midnight life

Just as it did my daylight strife

A dream which cuts my soul as a knife

Does rend the mortal flesh.

The darkness holds my immortal soul

Like a dragon trapped in amber

My punishment for feeling hope

As I reached for Heaven's grace.

I was cast out for my sin

My wings were ripped away;

My body torn and bleeding

Forever lost to light of day.

How foolish was I to ever feel

That life could offer something real

If only I would stop and kneel

Before a benevolent God.

How still the silent shadows lay,

Pooled under full moon's light.

How lovely, dark and decedent

Is this deep, eternal night.
