Quicksilver Dreams

Quicksilver Dreams

A Poem by Hamish McIndlister

It is only while we are writhing

In the bittersweet agony
Of the midnight of our souls
That we can truly see and appreciate
The beauty of the stars:
Those quicksilver dreams
Which shine so high above us
Leading us ever onward
Towards our certain deaths
While never offering us one iota more
Than the shadowy fragment
Of a dimly perceived dream.
This is all that we ever have,
All that life ever offers:
Nothing more than the promise of gold
At the end of some illusory dream
Resulting from a fevered sleep
From which we will one day awaken
Only to find God laughing riotously,
His deep, bass voice ringing in our ears
As he banishes us into eternal oblivion.
