A Poem by Madeline Derujinsky
"

A few thoughts on the concept of love

"
I think most little girls sit quiet and
think about what its like to fall in love,
and thats why we long for it.

I wish I could say I hadn't been that little
girl, but I was.
And the sad thing is that it really isn't
like the movies or a piece of poetry.

Love is like every word in the dictionary,
the ugly and the pretty ones,
set in different sequences for every story.
Some stories are more similar or frequent
than others.

Those are usually the ones they make movies
and books, and short stories about.

Love doesn't just disappear,
it fades, slowly and then all at once.
And even when you think its gone...

you remember that there are more words in the dictionary.

This a beautifully thoughtful way of thinking about the meaning of love. I like how it doesn't come across harsh or soft, but simple a flow of musing where the reader can ponder it and take it where they will. I think the last line really ends it well. The great thing about dictionaries is that even when we eventually run out of words, somebody creates more.
