Autumn

Autumn

A Poem by Sunbear

Rust and gold autumn leaves

Waltzing with the wind on the forest’s ballroom floor

Crunching beneath my feet.

The crisp, fresh air of the bright turquoise sky

Stark in contrast to the golden leaves

The sky has never been so blue!

Geese fly south to destinations unknown

            In a cloudy, darkened sky

            Invisible except for their voices.

Fresh cut hay in rows of green

Waiting to be swallowed and baled

Stacked and stored for winter feed.

A lone bull elk bugles in the morning sun

            His voice piercing the silence

            As he challenges any rivals.

Harvest moon in a star filled sky

A Great Horned Owl calls for its mate

            She answers from afar.

Pumpkin patch with globes of orange

            Topped with frosted ice

Waiting to be plucked and carved.

Beaver cache their winter pantry

Deer move down to sheltered woods

A lone wolf howls in the distance.

Seasons changing with shorter days

Crops and gardens are put to bed

Chilling winds will soon bring snow…

A perfect poem for this loveliest of seasons. Love that line, 'waltzing in the wind on the forest's ballroom floor.' What a grand way to describe the dancing of those beautifully coloured autumn leaves.
