Battle Scars

Battle Scars

A Poem by Michelle Spinney

“Everything happens for a reason” they said as I knelt at the altar.

“Turn your pain into prayer.”

They told me God was testing me,

Teaching me patience, humility, strength.

That I would heal only if I did it for Him.

They blinded me with optimism, weighed my pain with my sin,

And I listened. Who could do more than the Lord on high?

I was a soldier of the scripture,

A pawn in salvation.

Every bruise and scar a reflection of my devotion to Faith.

God wanted to make me stronger.

That’s why He did what He did to me.

Told me my hardships were only a blessing in disguise

“Put your faith in him and you will be saved”

The same words they said to both me and the man that struck me in the name of God.

Did he blacken my eyes so that I might better see the light?

When he hurt me with the same hands he then raised in worship.

I was told one day when I enter the kingdom I will look back and see it only as

Battle scars.
