9: The Annual Winter Festival

Saturday the eighth of December

“Lauren! Get up! Out of bed! Now!” Madison screamed into my ear, pulling on my arm and slowly tugging me out of bed. Suddenly I jolted up in bed realizing I wasn’t asleep anymore.

“Oh god. Madison. You scared the crap out of me.” I said wiping the sweat off my forehead. It was morning and I was late. I rubbed my eyes with the back of my hands.

“Hey Lauren.” Emerson said. He was sitting on my lounge chair by the window, leaning over tying his shoes. He was already dressed in the outfit he had pulled out of his bag last night and I was wondering why it wasn’t a suit. I remembered we needed to dress normal before the event happened, while we were just normal teenagers at our school’s annual winter festival.

“It’s seven o’clock. You wanted to leave at eight for shopping, so I thought I would give you an hour. Emerson is already ready as you can see, oh and he made coffee. He wakes up really early, like at six. Guess you’ll have to deal with that later.” I noticed Madison was still in her pajamas. They were quite scandalous. It wasn’t something I would call sleepwear. Barely a scrap of fabric. It was a thin red tank top and white pokadotted shorts that could be considered underwear.

“Okay. You can leave now.” I said hoping Emerson didn’t like that kind of stuff. Now I felt silly for wearing my gray and pink silk pajama pants with the matching long sleeve top when sleeping with my boyfriend. Madison was already sashaying out of the room by the time I said my last word. She waved her fingers in goodbye and shut the door firmly behind her.

“Oh Lauren. Don’t look so worried. She was in here for all of five seconds. It’s not like I like that stuff, besides I have you. And I love you.” Emerson said straightening. It was as though he could read my thoughts and feel my insecurities. Then it hit me. My moment of epiphany, the light bulb in my head.

“Your talent is like reading minds and stuff isn’t it?” It was like my mouth couldn’t come up with the words to describe him.

“Actually no. That’s just something we can do. You can read my thoughts if you wanted, but you never tried. You can’t hide them unless you’re taught to put up a mental blockade to keep me out. We can also project them back and forth from distances. Pretty cool huh? ” He said it was cool, but it only was for him, the one who could actually do it.

“Lauren, stop analyzing it and go get dressed before we’re late.” He said now stretching his arms over his head while looking out the window. I swung my legs out of bed and hopped down. I stood in my closet, hands on my hips, scanning the small room for something to wear. I had picked out my new Steve Madden boots that my father had sent me a few days ago, along with the Kate Spade purse he picked out for me as a happy first day gift.

“Emerson!” I yelled still scanning the closet for clothes.

“Yes Lauren?” He said peeking his head into the closet, but not fully entering.

“I don’t know what to wear.” I turned to face him, pouting.

“And?” He said, now stepping completely into the closet and standing beside me.

“I wanted your help.” I said turning again and walking over to the hanging rack of shirts, you gotta start somewhere.

“You suppose I could help you?” He said, sounding unsure.

“Sure you can, you’re good at this stuff.” My eyes scanned the colorful rack, raking over all the items putting them together in my mind. Emerson walked up behind me and grabbed a pink pullover.

“Here wear this.” I shrugged and pulled off my pajama shirt so I could change. Emerson was opening my jean drawer when I finally had the shirt over my head. His hand dug through the drawer.

“And put these on.” He said handing me my favorite pair of skinny jeans. I quickly removed my pajama bottoms before pulling the jeans on. I had to jump up and down for a while, but I buttoned them easily.  He moved on and opened the sliding doors that held all my coats. He picked out my black cape from Michael Kors. He draped it over the single chair I had in my closet and left.

“Thank you!” I called out to his retreating back. He grunted in reply.

I sank down into the overstuffed chair and bent to pull my boots on. I took the cape and my new purse and went to join Emerson and Madison. I silently padded down the hallway listening to their hushed talking wondering if I could read Emerson’s thoughts like he could read mine what he would be thinking right now. I stopped at the end of the hall to throw my hair up into a messy bun.

“Hey Laur.” Madison said smiling over the brim of her coffee cup as I walked in.

Madison was already dressed and perfect. How she managed to do that when we both started getting ready at the same time, well that would always be a mystery. Emerson handed me my coffee tumbler and I winced as I took my first sip of scolding hot coffee.

“Too hot?” Emerson asked his eyes filling with concern.

“Just a little, but let’s get going.” I said ignoring the knowing look in his eyes. He probably heard all the profanities that raced through my mind when I sipped it. Emerson led us out the door and towards Madison’s car. It was the only one on campus that would fit all three of us and all the things we brought back.

Her SUV was just sitting there as she rarely drove herself anywhere.

“You sure you remember how to drive?” I asked as she slipped into the drivers seat. She made a snorting nose and shut the door. I went around the front and got in the passenger seat while Emerson sat in the back.

“Of course I remember how to drive.” She said throwing the car into reverse. Madison was never the best driver to begin with, and now. Well she’s still a horrible driver, I’m actually glad she gets driven around everywhere after spending five minutes with her driving.

Number of times I held onto the car door for dear life: 18

Number of times Emerson offered to drive: 7

Number of time Madison had to slam on her brakes: 10

Number of times Madison said it’s fine when she almost drove off the road: 23

Finally we reached the mall. We decided to go shopping for dresses first because that would take longer and if Emerson got bored we could always send him off to the grocery store for us.

“How about this one?” Madison asked holding a long sweeping red dress out to me and shaking it.

“Um.” I said as my eyes ran up and down.

“Okay, so I’ll take that as a no.” She said placing it back onto the rack. Emerson sighed audibly from the bench he was sitting on. His ankles were causally crossed over one another, but his shoulders held stress. My mouth formed a hard line as I looked at him. For some reason he looked like the one who needed saving today. I didn’t get to kiss him or hold his hand. Madison pulled me away forcing me to turn away from the boy I loved, who now only looked like a shell of what he usually was.

“Maybe we should go to another store.” Madison stated, scanning the showroom.

We were in an exclusive boutique. So exclusive that no one could see it. Literally, a thick curtain, as not to show the inside, covered the storefront. It had heavy security around the perimeter. Honestly I thought it was ironic that they didn’t want to be seen yet they were located in the most visited mall in Vermont. Also it was ironic that this exclusive boutique was in Vermont, the only one in the country, the one that all the rich girls flocked to. From all across the United States and soon the entire continent of North America I’m sure.

“Miss?” Someone asked tapping me lightly on the shoulder.

“Yes.” I turned.

“I have exactly what you’re looking for. What size are you? 4?” Her eyes examined my waist.

“Uh, yes.”

“We may need the adjust the gown, but I believe it to be exactly what you’re looking for.” She repeated herself before scurrying away, probably to find the gown where it was hidden in the large showroom. Madison had disappeared at some point. Emerson wrapped his arms loosely around my waist from behind, I breathed in his additive scent. He seemed calm but on the inside I knew he was like a maximum-security prison. Lock down.

“Still worried about my stupid brother?” I asked, not that I wanted an answer. It was more of a rhetorical question because I already knew that was exactly the answer.

“Always.” He whispered his lips against my ear. He kissed the top of the head and released me.

“Lauren I think this is it. This is the perfect dress.” I felt cold as Emerson retreated to his seat in the background. Madison’s hand landed on my arm and I had a sudden urge to slap it away. I wished I could get out. Get Emerson and I to somewhere safe. Somewhere were my “brother” couldn’t ruin everything. I wished Emerson didn’t let this get to him, but I knew he would do just about anything to protect me so of course he would be worried about my “talented” brother coming and crashing our little party.

“Okay.” I nodded absently to console her.

If only I could quit. Run away, at least for a little while.

The woman who approached me before came back into sight, empty-handed. My stomach dropped, I would have to do this for longer.

“The dress is in the dressing room. I have to take a call but I’m sure you’re friend could help you get it on. I’ll come to check on you girls in a couple minutes.” She said gesturing to Madison before leaving again.

“We’ll be right back.” Madison said pulling me away, not so much as allowing me a glance back at Emerson. I’m sure he didn’t bother to lift his head from his hands where they had rested for the seconds that had passed. I was towed away to the dressing room. The dressing room contained the most beautiful red dress I had ever seen.

It was a ball gown fit for a princess. Not kidding. That’s what the label said. I examined it closer.

“Designed for Princess of Wales.” I read aloud.

“You’re kidding?” Madison squealed.

“No. Will you just help me into it?” I said flatly.

“Wow, what’s you’re problem?” She unzipped the dress so it fell into her open arms and off the hanger. I couldn’t tell Madison. I could not have one more person worry about me.

“Nothing, I just think Emerson’s acting weird today.” I said sighing. I just lied to my best friend’s face, straight to her face. And the worst part? She totally believed it. Madison smiled her golden girl smile that you knew she had to practice to get perfect. She patted me on the shoulder her smile turning sympathetic. Her father being a politician made that smile work. It made it work for anyone and everyone, real or fake I would never know. Its not like I could tell the difference. It didn’t have a single crack. Quickly I stripped off my clothes, standing in my strapless bra and lace panties I felt exposed. Exposed in front of Madison? That was crazy. We used to take baths together. I had changed in front of her too many times to count. Why I decided to get shy now? I’m not sure.

“I see someone is dressing up underneath these days.” She said absently, holding the dress onto the group allowing me to step into it.

“I know it isn’t as sexy as you’re pajamas Madison, but I’m sure they would do if I were to ever be in a jam.” I said as she shimmied the dress up and over my hips. The sarcastic hitch in my voice threw her. She starred up at me with her brown eyes wider then normal.

“Oh.” She said quietly. Her voice sounded small, but she continued to pull the dress up. It slid over my chest and I held it up as she zipped the back closed. It fit like a glove. No adjustments needed. The dress was a sweetheart neckline, strapless. A deep shade of red that I couldn’t place, small silver crystals covered the bodice. They trailed down the dress only spotted every mile or two of fabric. I stared at my reflection. The bottom was tulle and puffed out in a beautiful way, an over the top kind of way, one that made me feel like I should be dancing with my prince right about now.

“Was that why you wanted me out of your room so fast this morning?” She asked smoothing out imaginary creases in my ball gown.

“Yeah. I just thought that maybe Emerson would like you instead of me because you dressed more for boys.” I said looking down and feeling ashamed the words were even coming out of my mouth.

“Lauren you’re crazy. Emerson loves you and only you.  He would never like me because of how I dress to sleep. I thought he told you that.” She said putting her hands on her hips.

“He did. I just didn’t listen. Boys like that. They like when girls dress up to impress them, and I didn’t even think about it until now.”

“Emerson doesn’t. He isn’t that kind of guy Lauren, I just know it. He isn’t after the one thing that every other guy on this planet seeks out. He wants you. He wants to take you and keep you locked up away forever so you can never be hurt and so you can never think of liking any other guy.”

“When did you start having heart to hearts with my boyfriend?” I asked laughing.

“Since he started dating my sister,” She smiled. “But when he sees you in this he’ll swallow his tongue. Our heart to hearts won’t be happening for a week once we show him this.”

I studied myself in the three-way mirror. She was right, he probably would be speechless, and that’s exactly why I didn’t want him to see me in it. I knew he needed to have his head in the game so that he would be ready for anything my brother threw our way. I didn’t need to get his mind muddled with thoughts of his beautiful girlfriend.

“Madison? Will you do me a huge favor and help me get out of this dress?”

“Uh. Are you insane? We haven’t shown Emerson yet and the sales lady hasn’t decided what needs to be changed.” She sounded serious.

“I don’t want Emerson to see. I want it to be a surprise. A lovely surprise…” I trailed off running my hands down the front of the dress once again. Yet another lie rolled off my tongue. I didn’t lie. Not to Madison at least. She was my best friend, my sister; she was always there for me and was anything but dishonest to me. Every single secret she ever had I knew. Not that Madison was good at keeping her mouth shut in the first place, but she trusted me. Maybe one day I would tell her.

One day.

“Sure Laur. Let me just get the sales lady so she can see what needs altering.” With that she left. I let out a deep breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. I sunk down into the chair that sat by itself in the corner. I buried my head into my hands. How were we supposed to get through this? It seems every week something else is put in our way to stop us from moving forward.

I wondered what Emerson was doing awake last night and how he found out my brother was coming home. Honestly I really didn’t want to know. Now I understood why people had secrets, this was scary. All of it was really overwhelming. I didn’t realize I was crying until I heard Madison’s voice bring me back to the real world. My hands were wet and sticky. The area around my eyes was jet black like my mascara. My blue eyes were lost in a sea of red and I knew there was no way to cover this before Emerson saw me, he would not be happy.

“Maddy. How am I supposed to do this?” I cried as she rubbed my shoulders and tried to comfort me.

“Do what sweetie? What do you need to do?” She asked quietly.

“Be with Emerson. Live with his secrets. All the secrets. My brother. My dad almost died Maddy. My life is falling apart!” The words tumbled out. I never was the best at keeping things quiet.

“Madison Grace Sears. You will open this door right now.” Emerson voice rang through the room. His fists pounded against the thick door.

“Don’t do it Maddy. Please.” My voice was weak compared to Emerson’s.

“I can hear you Lauren. Come on Laur. I’ve already seen you cry, you can open the door.”

I didn’t say anything, I just shook my head and Madison understood.

“I’m sorry Emerson I can’t open the door. Why don’t you go to the grocery for us? I’ll get Lauren cleaned up and we’ll meet you in the food court. We’ll be there at nine forty five. Don’t be late.” She didn’t give him the chance to argue. His banging stopped and I heard his retreating footsteps.

I stopped crying.

“Thank you Maddy. You really are my long lost sister.” I said lifting my head from my hands and wiping under my eyes.

“Let’s go get you cleaned up before you ruin this dress. I’ll tell the lady we’ll take this one.” I smiled at her and she stepped outside after unzipping my dress. I let it drop to the floor and changed back into my regular clothes. She never asked about my brother. I didn’t have a brother, maybe she just didn’t notice. I was hoping that was the case, but I didn’t let myself fully believe that. She always caught every word I said, even when I was a crying mess.

Once I was back into my own clothes I hung the dress back on it’s hanger and slowly opened the door. Madison hadn’t come back with the sales lady so I guess we would figure that out later. I heard soft voices as I moved back towards the front showroom, apparently Emerson was back.

Madison’s voice was harsh. She was telling Emerson off. I slowed down as I didn’t want them to know I was listening. Obviously he said something to set her off. I knew it wouldn’t be pretty, but I entered the room and went to stand beside them. Unfortunately that was a wrong move, Madison did not look happy.

“Oh so now you’re taking his side?” I had no idea what she was speaking about since I only caught wind of little pieces of their conversation.

I moved so I was in the middle.

“Madison. Calm down. Explain to me what’s wrong.” I said trying to sound reasonable.

“Lauren you think you know him, but you don’t. You have no idea of the things he does right under your nose. And you would never even think it was happening because you’re so wrapped up in his pretty little lies.” She said bitterly.

“Whoa. Madison. If there is something wrong with our relationship then I’ll find it out and I’ll fix it myself. I don’t need your help doing it. You may be my best friend, but in the end it’s my choice. Our problems are our problems, we’ll fix them. No thanks to you.” I said just as harshly as she had only moments before. Then I moved out of the middle and took Emerson’s hand, he had kept quiet.

“Um Lauren. You haven’t even heard the half of it. Should I tell her or will you?” She asked shooting daggers at Emerson.

I looked between them and saw Emerson deflate.

“Lauren. Before this gets out of hand it’s not what you think. When I tell you this don’t say or do something you’ll regret later.” He said with his head lowered.

“Guys. Maybe we should drive home or go somewhere else and then you can explain.” I said looking at the sales lady who was listening to our conversation and peeking out from behind a corner.

“Yes. Let’s continue this at home ladies.” Emerson pulled me along towards the door and Madison stalked behind us. Her footsteps echoed through the room, stomping was never a good sign where Madison was concerned. I turned sharply on my heels causing Emerson to jerk in my direction.

“We’ll be back to pick up the dress by the end of the week. I’ll call to make an appointment,” I said to the lady who was still watching us leave. “Have a nice day.”

“You too.” She said disappearing behind the corner again.

***********************************

This time when we got into the car Emerson drove and Madison sat in the backseat pouting, her arms crossed tightly across her chest.

The entire drive was pretty much silent except for when I tried to play peacemaker, though it never quite worked out how I thought it would in my mind.

“Guys. It can’t be that bad. I’m sure it’s just a little bump"“

“A huge bump!” Madison interrupted, her hands clutching either side of the back of my seat.

“One that could potentially make or break your relationship.” She said fiercely. Emerson’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel. I sighed loudly and slumped back in my seat.

“You know there really is no use right.” Emerson said tearing his eyes away from the road to glance at me. It didn’t sound like a question. I nodded and turned away.

After what seemed like forever we arrived back at Madison and I’s shared house. Emerson followed us inside and shut the door behind us. It was now nine o’clock and if this discussion lasted as long as I thought it would then we would never make it out in time to do our rounds at ten. Emerson didn’t even get groceries for us.

“Madison. Lets be reasonable here. Talk like mature adults.”

“Emerson, are you kidding me right now? I’m not the one who is sneaking around at night with other girls.” I stepped back as though I had been hit. Sneaking around? Other girls? None of this made sense to me.

“You know that’s not the whole story Madison. You know it. The only problem is you won’t listen.”

“Leave!” I called out weakly.

“Excuse me?” Madison said.

“Both of you. Get out.” I said again my voice becoming louder.

“Laur. You don’t understand"”

“Emerson just go. Please. I need to think.” Madison nodded and moved towards the door. Emerson followed suit. I sank down onto the cold kitchen floor after the door shut. Once again I had ended up alone, crying.

I needed to pull myself together. I had responsibilities. Things I had to get done today. People were counting on me. I would let Emerson explain the rest tonight. Once they both cooled off and could hold their tongues if asked.

So I did what I’d been doing for my entire life. I faked it. I lied. I smiled while I reapplied my makeup so I looked decent. And when I opened the door and found Madison and Emerson sitting on the porch steps with his arm around her, I didn’t get mad. I simply walked down the stairs and in the direction of the festival music.

“Lauren, Lauren! Wait up!” Madison called, her footstep pounding against the pavement of the sidewalk as she chased after me. She jerked my arm back, I turned towards her and crossed my arms tightly against my chest.

“What?” I said through gritted teeth. She took the same stance and glared back at me, obviously she didn’t think she needed to be punished.

“Don’t get mad at Emerson. It was a total misunderstanding on my part. Don’t give him the cold shoulder, trust me. He explained everything. Totally not what I thought was going on. I was just trying to protect you.” She said, draping her hand delicately onto my shoulder.

“Madison… Did it ever occur to you that I don’t need to be protected? That I don’t need you to take care of me? Maybe you’re trying to make up for my mom dying, but Madison, she’s been gone a long time. I’ve taken care of myself for as long as I can remember. I don’t understand why you feel the need to butt into my relationships. You’ve done it more than once you know. Maybe you just need a boyfriend, or a hobby. Maybe go buy yourself a cat or something.” And with that I flicked her hand off my shoulder and walked away. I think she stood standing there for a whole minute before she picked her jaw off the ground and gained her composure.

“Lauren. You know it isn’t safe for you to be out here alone.” Emerson’s voice called out. That’s what stopped me. When he forced me to remember that my apparently evil long lost brother wanted to kill me and was probably going to be here today. Today at the winter fair. Here where I had no idea what he looked like or who he could be, he could bed anyone. I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around to face him.

“Fine. Come on then, let’s go before you make me late. I have people to impress.” I said with that fake smile still glued to my lips. Emerson sauntered over to me before silently slipping his hand into mine.

“If we have to play the part mine as well look the part too.” He said softly. I nodded curtly before resuming walking.

“What’s first Madison?” I asked.

“Well Lauren, you first should meet Emerson’s parents. I mean they are a very important part of why this is happening. The entire school has already been notified that this whole auction thing is going on today, so they will all be wanting to talk to you and Emerson about the whole ordeal. You and Emerson will probably need to split up around twelve so that you can talk to the girls who have questions and Emerson can do the same for the guys. Then you two won’t see each other again until around three because I’ll give you each an hour to talk to the genders, and then half an hour for lunch, and then one and a half hours to get ready. I mean unless you want to come to our house to get ready Emerson then you can do that and you’ll see each other earlier, but otherwise that’s pretty much the schedule. Now go.” She said pushing us forward into the crowd.

***********************************

“Just smile. You’ll be fine.” Emerson said squeezing my hand in reassurance.

“Do I have to meet your parents?” I asked my eyes pleading.

“Don’t do that Lauren. Don’t give me those eyes; I’m not immune yet. But yes, you do have to meet them. You’re different. I haven’t loved any other girls; I never told any other girl that I loved them. Besides, they’ll love you. I promise.” My heart fluttered at his words. He always knew the right thing to say.

“Okay…” I said still unsure about meeting them but I couldn’t refuse after he said that.

“Good. Now lets go. They’re waiting.” I looked around nervously and bit my lip, but I let him drag me along towards his parents. When we arrived at the tent where his parents were sitting they looked happy. They were smiling and laughing, even holding hands. I was more than a bit confused at the sight, I thought that Emerson’s parents were going through a nasty divorce.

Emerson bent slightly and then whispered , “it’s all for show.” I nodded and smiled before greeting them each with a quick hug. At this point Emerson and his dad left us girls alone to talk, they walked across the tent and stood in a circle of men who all greeted Emerson as though he was their own son, even handed him a beer that he kindly accepted.

“Oh how are you darling?” Emerson’s mother, Amelia Phillips, drawled. She took my hand, pulling me down onto the couch beside her. “Our Emerson has told us so much about you dear, he loves you very much you know.” I smiled at her statement.

“Yes, of course I know that. Wanna know a secret? I love him a lot too.” She smiled as she patted my hand, and I laughed quietly at her affection. Emerson winked at me from across the room right as my phone bussed in my purse. I fished it out and opened the text message from Emerson.

Emerson: I love the way your nose crinkles up when you laugh. I smiled down at my phone as his mother leaned over to see.

“Ah. That’s my boy right there. He treats you well I’m assuming? Because you know if he isn’t I can do some things about that.” Her face turned serious as she spoke to me.

“You assume correctly, he treats me very well. You don’t have to worry about that, I’ll let you know if anything is going on Mrs. Phillips.”

“Oh Lauren, please call me Amelia. We don’t need all the formalities. You’re practically already part of the family the way Emerson talks.” I nodded at what she said before replying to Emerson’s text message.

Lauren: I love you.

Emerson: Forgive me? It’s really not what you think, I swear. I’ll explain all of it later once we’re alone.

Lauren: If you say there’s nothing going on, then I trust there is nothing going on. Forgiven.

Emerson: Love you.

“So Lauren dear, how are you liking my wonderful school?”

“It’s really nice. I love it here. I think it was pretty much fate that I came here and met Emerson. And of course I’m very lucky to have my best friend Madison here with me. I think I’m adjusting just fine.” I said with a smile, a real smile.

“Well good dear. I’m glad to hear that. Tell me if any of the teachers are givin’ you grief. I’ll talk to them for you. Oh and please have Emerson bring you over for dinner one night, we need to give you a real meal, you’re as skinny as a rail.” She said, her eyes roaming my body.

“I will make sure he does that.”

“Good, now why don’t you do see my son. He’s been staring at you the entire time you’ve been over here. He must miss you or somethin’. I’ll go mingle with the adults. I’ll see you for dinner?”

“Yes ma’am.” I said slowly before giving her a quick hug and walking over to Emerson, who had walked away from the men his father was standing with and was in the middle waiting for me. He slid his arm around my waist and smiled down at me.

“I missed you.” He said softly. I laughed and buried my head into his chest. Emerson kissed the top of my head and released me out of his embrace.

“So where’s my brother that you said will be here?” I asked, my eyes scanning the crowd looking for anyone who looked out of place.

“He’ll be here. Trust me.”

“How can you tell? I mean it’s not like you can sense him or something right?” I asked though I didn’t really know if I would like the answer.

“You can tell. You just haven’t been trained to pick up the signals yet, but you will eventually. And no it’s not like I can sense him Laur, we aren’t dogs. I don’t pick up his scent and then just know he’s there. Don’t worry, I’ll train you to know the signs. For now I’ll just have to protect you.”

“Okay. Sounds good. Oh and you mother said you have to bring me to dinner at your house sometime. She thinks I’m too skinny.” Emerson laughed and let go of me so that he could bend over. I thought he might fall down because he was laughing so hard.

“Oh Lauren. Don’t listen to her, you’re perfect.” He said after he recovered.

“Sure. Whatever you say.”

“How about I go introduce you to my dad?” He asked taking hold of my hand.

“Sure.” Emerson led me towards the opposite side of the tent. We approached the large group of men who Emerson and his dad were standing with before, each held a glass of liquor in their hands.

“Dad. I’d like you to meet someone.”

“Well I’ll be. Is this the girl my son is so infatuated with? You’re even prettier then I imagined.” He held his arms out before picking me up off the ground and hugging me tightly.

“Dad.” Emerson scolded. His dad released me back onto the ground.

“Nice to meet you Lauren Daniels. I’m Collin Phillips and I am truly ashamed that I haven’t met you until now, you’re father and I have worked together for so many years yet we didn’t meet once.”

“Better late then never.” I said with a charming smile. Emerson laced his fingers through mine again and squeezed.

“That’s very true Lauren. I assume my Emerson is treating you right?” He asked throwing a stern look to Emerson.

“That’s funny. That is exactly what your wife asked me, but the answer is yes. I’m sure if you asked me that everyday for the rest of my life the answer would always be yes.” I said confidently.

“Well gosh darn it. Emerson you better not mess this one up, she seems to be in love with you.” He nudged his son affectionately and gave him a wink. The other men around gawked at Mr. Phillips words. They seemed surprised to hear that their golden boy had someone who was in love with him.

“I’ll try not to Dad. Unfortunately Lauren and I need to go now, but I think that we’ll see you later tonight, and Mom made me promise to bring Lauren to dinner sometime this week. I’ll see you later.” Then Emerson pulled me away without letting me say goodbye to his father. I heard his father’s hardy laugh as we exited the tent.

My ringtone cut through the noise of the crowd. I pulled it out and checked the recently received message.

Unknown: Hey sis. Long time no see.

I showed Emerson the text that was so obviously from my brother. Emerson let a low growl out as he read the message.

“He’s watching.” Emerson said as his eyes traveled through the crowd searching for my brother.

Unknown: I can see you, but you won’t see me.

“Crap. He’s using his talents. We won’t be able to see him unless he wants us to.” Emerson stood his head and pulled me away again.

“Where are we going?” I asked in panic.

“Away. He’s here and he can see us, but we can’t. We need to get away for a little.”

“What do you mean? We’re leaving? You’re taking me away?”

“Sure.  If that’s what it takes.” Emerson whirled around and almost yanked my arm out of its socket.

“Ouch! Emerson! Stop it!” I yelled, although it was drawing more attention.

“Shhh. Lauren.”

“Emerson. It’s been a while, have you been taking care of my little sis?” A tall man who couldn’t be much older than me stepped out of the crowd. He smiled showing his perfect white straight teeth.

“Grayson, hello. Lauren, look what the cat dragged out.”  His eyes were black as coal, or maybe I was imagining it, but that was doubtful. I stepped behind Emerson to shield myself from his intense stare. He looked like all the darkness in the whole was sucked out and put into his body.

Grayson Jeremiah Blake. Well, never thought I would see you again.” A voice came from behind me. I turned around and saw Madison.

“Madison? You know him? You’ve met him?” I asked, the fear obvious in my voice.

“Oh yeah. We’re old friends.” She said with a sneer.

“Come on baby. Don’t be like that.” He said with that stupid half grin I wished I could wipe off his face.

“You’re seriously asking me not to be like that? You have no right. How dare you!” She said quietly though her voice was hard as a diamond.

“If you touched either of these girls I’ll kill you.” Emerson said stepping forward, so close Grayson could probably feel Emerson’s breath.

“Oh Emerson, don’t go getting your panties in a twist. Besides I’m thinkin’ you should be more afraid of me and what I can do. And no worries there, I won’t lay a hand on my little sister, right Lauren?” He said with a quiet laugh, as he stepped away from Emerson and ran his fingers down my cheek. Emerson was on him so fast I didn’t know what was happening until Emerson was dragging Grayson away from me by the collar of his black t-shirt. I wanted to hurl. Toby was by Emerson’s side in a flash and was also helping him drag Grayson away.

“Are you okay?” Madison asked quietly, once again rubbing my back softly and offering reassurance.

“No.” I said firmly. That was the last thing I said before I ran. I ran far away. I didn’t know where I was going or how I was going to get there, all I knew was that I had to get out. This time I didn’t have someone safe to go, I couldn’t run to my mother’s grave. She usually was there to offer guidance. I couldn’t run to my dad and tell him my life was falling apart and demand answers about Grayson. And I certainly couldn’t go find Emerson and let him hold me and lie down beside me, allowing me to feel safe and protected.

There was no safe house.

Where are you going Lauren?

The voices in my head were getting worse, I had no idea how to control them. I just knew they were there.

Lauren. Tell me where you’re going!

The voice had gotten louder. Sounded more forceful. I shook my head but kept running. I didn’t realize where I had been going until I got there. I would be safe here. At least for a little while. I knew I still needed to go back out there and do the whole auction thing with Emerson, but I had time.

Lauren. Lauren. You shouldn’t run away from me. I will find you. Just stay put.

I opened the large oak door a crack and saw that the library was deserted. I was alone. The door shut behind me with a loud creek. I tried to ignore the voice in my head as much as I could and decided to grab a book and get lost in it. That was my best idea. I could stay hidden in here for at least an hour before Madison would track me down and drag me back to the house to get into my party dress.

I walked through the shelves aimlessly. None of the books appealed to me at that point. I sighed loudly as I ran my fingers across the spines of several books.

Lauren. It’s just me, Emerson. You’re not some crazy person, and I know you’re in the library, I’ll be there in five.

I sat down on the floor of the shelves and waited. Emerson would get here soon and everything would be all right in my eyes, even though my head said something was very, very wrong. Thinking back to when Emerson and I first talked about my ‘talent’ I remembered him mentioning something about us being able to communicate to each other over distances, though it didn’t click until now that the soft voice in my head was really just Emerson. I suppose I didn’t want to let that voice into my head, not until now. Though somehow Emerson managed to push through my wall, as usual.

The large door creaked open splaying a streak of light down the aisles.

“Lauren?” His voice echoed through the old library.

“Over here.” I called weakly. His footsteps rapidly followed my voice. He saw me sitting on the floor and immediately came and kneeled in front of me.

“What’s wrong my beautiful girl?”

“Nothing.” I said my voice still shaky. Emerson’s thumbs grazed my cheeks as he searched my face.

“Lauren. Sweetheart. It’s all right. We’ll be all right, we just need to get through today without another interruption and then we can go. I swear Lauren I won’t let anything happen to you, I’ll keep you safe. Think about it. We can go to my house in Canada for Christmas. Madison can come, your dad, anyone you want. We can get away, we can get out Lauren. Just today. We don’t have to go to the dance, Madison will understand.” His eyes locked with mine and I saw all the love in the world. He wasn’t lying. Emerson brushed the hair away from my face and gave me a small grin. He pulled me up to my feet but continued to kneel in front of me. My face twisted into confusion.

“Emerson. What are you doing?” I said half laughing. He just stared up at me with that grin glued to his face.

“Lauren Elizabeth Daniels"” He started slowly.

“Emerson, no. You don’t have to do this. Just, just come on. Stand up. We have to go.” I said stumbling. Emerson continued to kneel though I attempted to pull him up to me. He shook his head softly and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath and opened them again. Emerson gave me that bright smile that made my heart melt every single time.

“Lauren Elizabeth Daniels. I love you; I love you with all my heart. You are my other half. The love of my life, and I knew it from that first time that I saved you in the middle of the sidewalk.” He laughed.

“Saved me? No way.” I said sarcastically.

“I did and you know it. But let me finish. I knew it from that very first day, maybe even before. Just being with you makes me a better person. You make me smile and laugh and you love me for who I am. You’re different from any other girl I’ve met. My family loves you and already considers you family, hell I consider you family Lauren. I want to be with you, for a long time"“

“Don’t say it Emerson. You don’t have to. I know you love me. Come on, this is silly.”

“No Lauren. This isn’t silly. This is real. This love is endless. Magic, pure magic Lauren. And I want to keep it forever. I want to know that you’ll always be mine, that you’ll always love me because I will always love you.” He held my hands tightly and squeezed them while giving me another heart melting smile.

“You’re my everything.” He said softly. My eyes started to water and I ripped my right hand away to wipe at them furiously. He smiled a crooked smile before continuing.

“So Lauren Elizabeth Daniels. Will you promise me that we’ll always be together?” He laughed softly.

“I know we’re too young to get married. I know, but I want you to be there. I want to marry you, some day. Some day in the future, when we’re older. So promise me?” He said meeting my eyes with intensity.

“Of course!” I said a little too loudly, luckily there was no one in the library. Emerson dug around in his pants pocket for something and came out with a small black velvet box.

“In that case, I think you’ll be needing this.” He opened the box and inside a diamond ring stared back at me. It wasn’t like an engagement ring. It was much better. The tiny diamonds were made into the shape of an infinity knot. Simply it was beautiful. Though Emerson said we weren’t getting married, at least not yet anyways, he slipped it onto my ring finger silently anyways. Emerson rose from the ground and gathered me up in his arms before spinning me around a few times and kissing me sweetly.

“Ah. It feels good to get that off my chest.” I looked into his eyes and the love was even more visible.

“How long have you been hiding this from me?” I asked, smacking his chest playfully still being held off the ground.

“Oh, you know. Just since you moved to my school.” Emerson said slowly releasing me and lowering me to the ground. He was blushing slightly so I reached up and ruffled his hair.

“It’s okay, I knew I loved you for a while.” I said laughing and locking his fingers with mine.

“Lets get out of here Laur. We have things to take care of.”

“Like our wedding? Or your mother when she finds out you pretty much proposed to me?” I said looked up at him as he led me out of the library. Emerson laughed as he pushed the door open.

“I think my mother will be worse than planning our wedding Lauren, and I did not propose to you. My proposal of marriage to you will be much fancier, like we’ll be in France and there will be an orchestra involved fancy.”

“Okay Emerson whatever you say. You know Madison is going to kill us for sneaking away. How did you even get your hands on my ring size when I had just met you and transferred to your school?” I asked, my eyes lightening with curiosity.

“Well a good magician never reveals his secrets, but I can give you a hint. It’s one of these two things. Either you’re a really heavy sleeper or your best friend gave it to me because she had some crazy notion that we were meant to be.”

“I’m gonna kill her or maybe thank her. Depends.”

“On what?” Emerson said taking his hand back and slipping it around to waist instead.

“Official girl business Emerson, sorry.” A permanent smile had been on my face since Emerson was kneeling in front of me in the library.

“Oh darn! That sucks.” He said faking disappointment.

“Uh huh.” I murmured snuggling tighter into his side. I sighed with contentment. We walked back towards the carnival.

“Did you know I love you?”

“Did you know, I love you more?” I said turning slightly and kissing him softly.

“Whatever you want sweetheart.”

“Awww. So cute. Does that mean I have to give you whatever you want too?” I flirted.

“Not if you don’t want to.” He frowned slightly, before covering it with a grin.

“Emerson! Lauren!” Someone called out through the crowd we were now weaving through, not that I noticed the crowd. The only person I saw was Emerson.

“Hey mom.” Emerson said loosening his grip on my waist and giving his mother a kiss on the cheek.

“Where did you two run off too?” She said with a knowing smile.

“Um.” Emerson said his blush returning.

“Emerson gave me a promise ring.” I blurted before I could censor myself. I wanted to scream it from the rooftops, but for now I could settle on telling his mother. Her jaw dropped.

“When did my son become a romantic?” She asked quietly putting her hand on Emerson’s shoulder; his blush was now full force.

“Over night.” He said scratching the back of his head shyly.

“Well don’t keep me in suspense dear. Show me the rock!” She said, the excitement was evident in her voice. I lifted my left hand and placed it softly in her right. She gawked and turned my hand so the sunlight caught the ring. I smiled at Emerson as he bit his lip.

“It’s beautiful right?”

“It’s gorgeous sweetheart.” I saw her eyes start to water, and I knew that feeling. I pulled her into a tight hug.

“I love him.”

“I know dear, I know.” I let her go slowly and Emerson smiled at us.

“Now don’t get any ideas Mom. We aren’t getting married just yet.” He said staring down at me before picking up my left hand and absently spinning the ring around my finger.

“Oh shush Emerson. You know I’ve been planning your wedding for years. Now go see your father and tell him the news.” She said giving us a shove towards the tent.

We quickly found Emerson’s father in the same place. He was standing with a group of men, holding his barely touched drink.

“Dad, sorry to interrupt but mother told us to come and give you the good news.”

“Oh son. Word travels fast. I’ve already heard. Congratulation seems to be in order. Guys, congratulate my son and his girlfriend on their engagement.” He said patting his son on the back. The men started openly at us.

“Aren’t you two a little young to be engaged?” One man asked.

“We aren’t engaged really. I just gave her a promise ring.” Emerson answered.

“Well good for you my boy.” Another said. It continued like this until everyone had said their congrats. Abruptly my phone started to ring in my pocket. I glanced down and saw that Madison was calling.

“Excuse me, I need to take this.” I said turning away and moving outside the tent.

“Where are you?” Madison said quickly.

“Well hello to you too. I’m with Emerson; we were talking to his dad. Why?”

“It’s like eleven fifty and I can’t find you. You have to talk to the girls about the auction and Emerson needs to go meet with the boys. I won’t keep you lovebirds apart for too long so don’t worry. Just meet me in the blue tent in five, and send Emerson to the purple one.” The phone went silent as she hung up. I re-entered the tent and pulled on Emerson’s sleeve.

“Hey babe. We need to go to the tents now to discuss the whole auction thing with the people.”

“Okay sweetheart. Sorry guys, I have to go take care of something. I’ll see you guys later. Bye Dad.” Then Emerson turned taking my left hand and pulling me away. Once we got outside I told him where he needed to go. He continued to absently twirl the ring on my finger.

“I love you beautiful girl.” He said stroking the back of his hand down my cheek. Emerson leaned in and kissed me softly.

“I love you.” I replied. He pulled me into a hug.

“I’m so glad you said yes. I’m so glad you’re mine.” His words were hot against my ear. I closed my eyes and wrapped my arms around his waist pulling him into me.

“I’m so glad you asked.” I said laughing.

“I should go. You’re going to make me late.” Emerson pulled on a serious face but soon broke it with yet another heart melting smile.

“I really don’t care.” I said standing on my tiptoes to kiss him.

“Now can I go?” He asked, his voice full of innocence.

“Sure, I’ll see you at one o’clock at my place for lunch and then we can get ready together okay?”

“Bye beautiful girl.” He turned and walked towards the purple tent. I watched his retreating back until he disappeared inside the tent. I turned around and ran smack into a hard body.

“Oh my. I’m so sorry.” I said quickly, my hands still holding on to his chest so I didn’t fall.

“No, no. Totally my fault. I didn’t watch were I was going.” He said. I looked up as he straightened his glasses. His eyes were a sad blue grey; they were hidden behind thick glasses.

“Ever think about getting contacts?” He seemed thrown by my honesty.

“No actually, I haven’t. Do you wear them?”

“No. I just think your eyes would look better without the thick frame of your glasses hiding them.”

“Connor.” He said extending his hand. I cocked my head before shaking it.

“Lauren Daniels.” I said softly after he released my left hand.

“Engaged?”

“No, just a promise ring. Well not engaged yet, as my boyfriend would say or want me to tell guys at least.” My phone vibrated again in my pocket and I knew I needed to get to the tent or Madison might blow her top.

“Well it was nice meeting you Lauren Daniels. I’ll see you later.” Then Connor disappeared back into the crowd. I didn’t linger, I quickly made my way to the tent.

“Where were you? You know there are other times when you can make out your boyfriend.”

“Always an attitude. Nice Madison.” I looked around and there were about twenty or so girls standing around the room haphazardly. I didn’t mention my run in with Connor.

“Ladies. This is one of your hosts, Lauren Daniels. Or you might know her as Emerson Phillips girlfriend. She will be here to answer any questions you may have about the auction taking place tonight or the Snowflake Ball.” Madison announced. As soon as she said the word ladies the room had fallen silent. I was amazed at how good she was at this. Once she finished she gave me a glass of cider and told me to mingle. The room filled with mindless chatter. Snow Patrol played softly in the background. I sipped my cider and waited for questions.

“So Lauren. How exactly will this auction work?” A redhead asked just as I had finished swallowing my cider.

“Well that’s a good question"”

“Alice.”

“That’s a good question Alice. The way this works is that this evening every one will gather together in a large tent. Each of you will be provided with a number on a card that you will raise to bid on the boys. Madison and I have hand picked boys for you lovely ladies to bid on. They are all from this school, and I assure you they are the best guys. So one by one each will come onto the stage and they will be announced. We’ll give some general info such as their name and age, excreta. And then we’ll go into more detail giving you some hobbies, any sports they play, things like that. Then we’ll open it up to you and we’ll take your bids. We’re trying to raise as much money as we can this year. So if you happen to win a guy then you will attend the Snowflake Ball with them as your date.” I said calmly explaining the process to Alice.

“Who else is hosting?” A blond with large b***s asked.

“None other then my wonderful boyfriend Emerson Phillips.” I smiled at her.

“Is it true you’re engaged to him?” Another girl asked. I couldn’t tell which, they were surrounding me at this point. Wow, word does travel fast around here.

“Um. No, he just gave me a promise ring.” I said feeling the heat rising. I wasn’t used to having my relationship in the spotlight.

“Aw. Can we see?” One asked. The other girls joined in until they were begging.

“Okay. Fine.” I said lifting my left hand and expecting the worst.

“Wow. It’s so beautiful.”

“You’re so lucky.”

“Oh my gosh. Why isn’t my boyfriend this amazing?”

“I want that!”

The compliments went on and on. My phone vibrated in my pocket and I fished it out with my right hand while still showing off my ring.

Emerson: Having fun with the girls?

I laughed to myself. He was too cute.

Lauren: Not really, they’re admiring my ring and swooning. Wishing they had a boyfriend as amazing as mine is.  LOL

Emerson: The guys think I’m getting lucky tonight. Word gets around fast.

I gasped at Emerson’s text. Did people really think the he would get into my pants for giving me a ring? I stared down at the phone.

Lauren: Is that really what they think? I’m easy?

Emerson: No sweetheart. Don’t worry about what they think; I’ll set them straight.

Lauren: I should go. See you @ 1. Love u

Emerson: Love u 2. See u then  <3

I sighed and shoved my phone back into my jeans. The girls were conversing among themselves again, most was talk about Emerson and I or my ring. I finished off my cider and grabbed another from a tray a passing waiter was carrying. Maybe I could sneak off.

Don’t even think about it.

Emerson! Get out of my head; this is why we have phones, to text. Communicate.

It’s so much more fun this way. You get all freaked out and stuff. Nobody can tell that we’re having a secret conversation right now you know.

Well duh. It’s all happening in my head. The girls don’t seem to care much about the auction right now so I thought maybe…

No Lauren. You are not coming to see me. We already snuck off once today; just survive another half an hour without me.

Hey Emerson?

Yeah Laur?

About this morning… what was Madison talking about when she said you were sneaking around with other girls?

Lauren, I’m mentally groaning. It wasn’t multiple girls, just one. But not like you think. She’s an old friend of mine, she has a talent, but it’s more like a gift. I went too see her to get information about your brother. That’s how I knew he was coming back, that’s why I’m ahead of Damon's game by two steps. So yeah, I’m sorry I had to sneak around to do it, but you didn’t know about your talent then. Really there was nothing I could do. You forgive me though right?

Of course I do. Por supesto.

When did you learn Spanish?

When I was eleven and the housekeeper only spoke Spanish…

You never mentioned it.

You never asked.

Touché.

I’ve gotta go Emerson. Girls need a leader.

Bye sweetheart, I’ll try and keep out of your head, but don’t count on it.

Kay.

“Lauren.” Madison snapped her fingers in front of my face. All the girls were staring at me.

“Um. Sorry I was in space, what were you saying?”

“I was discussing the whole color scheme for the Snowflake Ball.”

“Oh yeah. Okay.”

“Lauren, sorry to interrupt, but I need to talk to you.” I heard a manly voice and spun around.

“Connor? Sure. Um. We can talk outside.”

“I’ll bring her right back Madison.” Then he took my arm and led me outside the tent.

“Uh, so what’s up?”

“You know your brother is here?”

“How the hell do you know about my brother?”

“Not important Lauren. Answer the question.”

“Yes, of course I know he’s here. Emerson told me.”

“Of course he did. The perfect little boyfriend knows everything. Anyways, you need to leave.”

“Leave? Connor you have no idea. I don’t even know who you are. Why would I listen to you?”

“Because I know that something bad is about to happen and you really should leave. Now.”

“Connor, I think I’m fine. I can take care of myself and besides Emerson said he’s ahead of Damon’s plan by two steps. If you’ll excuse me I need to get back to my friends.” He tightened his grip on my arm.

“Lauren. Listen to me. You need to leave. Now. If not with me then call Emerson and get him to take you away, but you need to get out before you get hurt.” Emerson appeared beside me.

“Get away from her.” He said forcefully.

“Emerson. Come on man. You know how dangerous Grayson is, you need to take her to safety before something happens.”

“Connor, that’s my problem not yours. So I suggest you take your hands off my girl before I have to kick your a*s.”

“Whatever man.” Connor mumbled under his breath before letting go. I stood idly by while the two argued, but I’d had enough of that.

“Um, if you too are finished with your cat fight I think I’ll be heading back inside now.” Emerson grabbed my hand as I turned to leave. Connor stood there looking angry, his arms crossed over his chest.

“Lauren, Connor is right. We need to leave. Just tell Madison that you are really hungry and need to go eat lunch now.” I rolled my eyes.

“Em, come on I don’t need to leave. I was just getting started.”

“Lauren sweetheart, it’s not safe out here. I can’t protect you when you’re away from me. Go tell Madison, please. It’ll make me feel better.” He stared into my eyes with a pleading look. I didn’t know how to say no.

“Fine. I’ll go tell her. Just wait here, I’ll be right back.”

“Thanks beautiful girl.” Emerson said before flashing me a smile. I shook my head before walking back inside the tent. It was silent; they were definitely listening to my conversation.

“Um. Madison. I’m sorry to cut this short, but I really have to go will you finish this up for me?”

“Sure Laur. I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah, see you later. Bye ladies.” With that I turned on my heel and went back out to join the boys.

“That was fast.” Emerson commented.

“Yep. Let’s go.” I said quickly allowing him to slip my left hand into his right. Only barely noticing how he twirled the ring around my finger again. Connor stalked behind us still looking very angry. We walked back to my house. Once we got to the front door I found my keys in my purse and shoved them in the lock, no one had spoken a word that entire time.

“So this is my place Connor. I’m sure Emerson can show you where anything you need is.” Connor didn’t reply he just waited for us all to be inside before locking the door and dead bolting it shut. I was confused; I had never seen that deadbolt on our door before.

“Lauren, you want me to order some lunch?”

“Sure babe. Get whatever you guys want, I’ll just be a minute.” I squeezed his hand and headed towards my bedroom.

I took my phone out of my pocket the minute I shut my bedroom door. The phone rang a few times; I silently prayed he would pick up.

“Hello?”

“Damon I don’t know what the hell you’re planning to do, but you better stop right now before I have to hurt you.”

“Oh sister. So great to talk to you again.”

“You know I’ll do anything to keep my friends safe, if anything happens to them I’ll kill you.”

“I’ve heard your idle threats sister, so don’t go trying that tactic. You know I’m so much stronger than you are. Your poor little boyfriend doesn’t even have a clue.”

“Shut up Damon. I didn’t have a choice.” I growled through the phone. I wanted to throw it as hard as I could against the wall, hoping it would break into a million little pieces. Hoping I wouldn’t have to hear my brother’s voice again.

“Oh sure, poor Lauren Daniels. New York socialite forced to move to Vermont. Rich daddy’s girl gets a Mustang for her birthday. Poor Lauren Daniels who has a freakin’ designer make all her clothes. Don’t play the victim card Lauren. Not with me.”

“I’m sick of lying for you Damon. I love Emerson. I want to marry him and have a family with him, and lucky for me he wants the same"” I heard Damon’s sneer and gritted my teeth before continuing.

“Anyways, the point is Emerson loves me for who I am. I don’t want to lie to him. I’ll tell Emerson everything if it’s the last thing I do on this Earth.”

“Lauren, just wait until after the snowflake ball and then you can have you cushy life back to yourself. Let them continue to paint me as the bad guy, that’s all they know about me anyways. Not the side I’ve decided to show my only other living relation.”

“Remind me again why I’m helping you?”

“Because I’m your brother and family helps family out. Also because as mentioned before you would do anything to keep your friends safe.” Damon said matter-of-factly.

“I don’t understand though. You never told me your intentions, I"” I was interrupted by my bedroom door creaking open. Emerson stood in the doorway casually, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest. I held my finger up to him and he nodded slowly.

“Sorry, I’m gonna have to call you back later.”

“Lauren! We didn’t finish our conversation, don’t you dare hang up.”

“Sorry Madison, lover boy wants to steal me away. Talk to you later. Love you.”

“Lauren! Don’t"” I shut the phone and slipped it into my back pocket. Emerson cleared his throat.

“Oh, so you were talking to Madison that entire time?” He asked slowly.

“Yep. Just girl talk.” I looked away from his intense stare and pulled a sweatshirt out of my drawer. I threw off my shirt and pulled the sweatshirt on instead.

“Really? Cause you know, I just got off the phone with Madison before I walked in here.” He came to stand beside me. Wrapping his arms around my waist he turned me in his arms. He put a finger under my chin and I was forced to look up into his eyes.

“Why are you lying to me Lauren?” His voice was so quiet if I wasn’t standing that close to him I probably wouldn’t have been able to hear him.

“I don’t want to…” I said trying to look away, but the green in his eyes was very present and I knew he was mad at me. His gaze held me.

“Then why are you?”

“Emerson, if I tell you then you’ll be more mad then you’ve ever been. You’ll probably dump me and never speak to me again.” I said weakly.

“Lauren Elizabeth! How could you think that? I would never do that. Even if I’m mad I won’t break your heart. I love you too much to leave. I can’t think of one thing that would make me so mad that I wouldn’t ever speak to you again, so you best tell me or I will have to go through your thoughts to find out what’s really going on.” I hung my head in shame.

“I’ve been in contact with Damon.” I said, my head still lowered. The floor seemed more interesting then seeing the rage cross Emerson’s face. His arms flew from where they had been resting comfortably on my waist before. His presence was gone, I felt cold and alone even though he was still in the room.

“Since when?” He asked through gritted teeth.

“For about a month.” I was nervously tapping my fingers together. Emerson started to pace short distances on the carpet. I glanced up quickly to see Emerson pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He was back to using his quiet calm voice. If he was calm there was something wrong. He was supposed to be mad at me. He was supposed to be yelling at me for screwing up.

“Because Emerson. Everyone has secrets, besides he is not who you think he is.”

“Then please, enlighten me. Who is your brother really?” He asked after stopping directly in front of me and putting his fists onto his hips.

“He’s a good guy Emerson. You just haven’t seen that side of him. He wanted to come and see me, make sure I was okay. He heard about my father’s accident and jumped on the first plane to get to me. Contrary to what you believe to be true, Damon does not want my father’s money Emerson. He showed me his bank account and he is better off than my father is. This could be because he was probably in Russia working with the black market, but still. He has enough money. Damon will only stay until after the Snowflake Ball. Afterwards he will disappear until something else happens.”

“Lauren, how could you be so naïve? He’s playing you. You’re just a pawn in his master plan. He is going to do something, you just watch.”

“But Emerson I’ve talked to him, he wouldn’t lie to me. He only wants"” Emerson cut me off.

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore tonight Lauren. Just come and eat. Act like nothing happened, we can’t have Connor thinking something is wrong.” Emerson said opened my door and gesturing for me to go through.

“Okay, you know I love you right?”

“Sure Laur, I’ll always know that.” He kissed the top of my head as I walked slowly through the doorway. Once we were both in the hallway Emerson took my left hand and continued to play with the ring that sat prettily on my finger as he had done the entire day. I don’t think I would ever get used to loving him. Having him love me.

When did I become that girl? The girl who lived for her boyfriend, who was with him every minute she could. Did I want to be that girl? The thoughts came so quickly I didn’t have time to banish them from my mind.

Of course I wanted to be that girl. I love Emerson. Besides, without him I would have never found out about my talent. I never would have someone to hold me when something goes wrong, someone to whisper sweet nothings to me before I drifted off to sleep. I would never get that heart melting smile come only for me. I wouldn’t have someone to plan a future with, to buy a house with, or to hold my hand through everything.

I was that girl. I would always be that girl.

“Lauren, I ordered you a Caesar salad. Oh and some chocolate strawberries, so lets cross our fingers your dress still fits after this lunch.” Emerson smiled at me before pulling my chair out at the table. Connor sat across from me, his eyes still stormy. It probably just made it worse that Emerson was making jokes at a time when Connor thought everyone should be serious.

“Oh don’t worry Em. I’m sure it will be fine.” Connor sipped his glass of water quietly. Emerson and him exchanged a look I couldn’t decrypt. Maybe I didn’t want to know what it meant.

“So Lauren, where do you think I could get these contacts from?” Connor asked. He made it seem as though everything was perfectly okay. Like something wasn’t bound to blow up at any moment. He seemed calmer than any of us. Even Emerson who usually made me feel safe and protected was tense and seemed on edge. I laughed nervously at Connor’s question.

“Um. You should probably go get them from your optometrist.” I answered unsurely. Connor didn’t get the chance to answer as the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it.” Connor said shortly. He stood from his chair stiffly. Before opening the door he looked through the peek hole. Extra safety precautions. He cracked the door open just enough for whoever was on the other side of that door to slide a cart of food in and then he immediately slammed it closed and put the lock back into place.

“You do know that the server isn’t going to come in here and try to kill me right?” I said slowly.

“You never know cupcake.” He rolled the cart over to the table and started to put the plates down on the table. Emerson’s hand tightened on mine. He spun the ring around faster. I put my free hand onto his forearm and forced a smile.

“Let’s eat.” I said before removing my hand from his arm and shoving a large bite of salad into my mouth, I thought that way I wouldn’t have to say anything about the comment that came from Connor’s mouth or why he thought that it was okay to call other people’s girlfriend’s pet names. I shook my head while I chewed.

“So. Let’s talk business.” Emerson said before wiping his mouth and clearing his throat. He folded his hands together on the table not bothering to touch the food Connor set down in front of him.

“Obviously we need a plan of action, you know in case Damon actually decides to pull this off.”

“Which he won’t.” I said sharply.

“What do you know about this Lauren?” Connor asked his eyes wide with confusion.

“Nothing, I mean I do know something. If I know anything it’s that my brother wouldn’t do something. He’s not stupid enough to try something with a crowd this large… It’s a suicide mission. Even Damon knows that. Besides we don’t even know what his intentions are. He could want to be blow the whole place up for all we know. We literally have no information on this whole operation.” I shoved another bite into my mouth.

“She has a point Connor. Who really knows why Damon is here?” Emerson pointed out. He put his hand to his mouth thoughtfully.

“Of course she has a point, but I’m still putting my men out there. They will just act as a safety net if something does go down tonight. I know Damon’s patterns and you’re right Lauren, he isn’t so stupid as to try something in a crowded place like the auction.”

“Have you already contacted your guys?” Emerson asked, his eyes pensive.

“Of course. They’re already out there looking for any suspicious activity, though I doubt they will find any this early into the evening. If they do they’ll contact me immediately.”

“Good. Now let’s just enjoy lunch and then you can go and get yourself ready, Connor.” Emerson said slicing into his steak. Personally I thought it was a little heavy for lunch, but I don’t think Emerson expects to have time to eat dinner between this whole auction thing and looking out for Damon. I sighed and watched Connor pick up his sandwich. This was going to be an awkward lunch.

“So Connor… What grade are you in?” I didn’t really know the guy, if he was going to be protecting me I needed to know at least a few things about him.

“Eleventh.” He said once he finished chewing his food.

“I guess that’s why I haven’t met you before now.” I nervously rambled.

“No, you would have met me. You just haven’t been very observant.” Connor retorted.

“That’s enough Connor. She barely knows anything about her talent as it is. You can’t honestly be mad at her for not noticing your… closeness. Lauren still hasn’t captured what this school is really about, eventually she will, but leave her alone for now. Besides would you really have wanted her to notice you? It could have blown your entire cover and everything we’ve worked towards.” Emerson argued.

“You know what? I’m really getting tired of all these stupid secrets. I don’t understand half of what you guys are talking about. I don’t get why you can’t just tell me the whole truth and everything that’s going on.” I miffed.

“Lauren, sweetheart. I understand that’s its frustrating, but there really is nothing we can do about it. It’s in the rulebook. Maybe you could try and get Damon to explain it to you. I mean technically speaking he is your family, therefore according to the rules he should be able to tell you.” Emerson took my hand and looked into my eyes.

“No. Emerson you don’t understand! Nobody does! Not a single person! I thought that I was normal. I thought that everything was going to be easy. Not that I would have an evil brother, a magical boyfriend, and a couple of bodyguards. Nothing is adding up these days, I just can’t take it all. I can’t do this.” I quickly stood up and raced towards my bedroom. I slammed the door shut and clicked the lock closed. Two sets of footsteps followed in rapid succession.

“Lauren. Stop fighting it. You just have to accept this is what we are. This is what your life is, our life. You know, if you don’t let me in I’ll just let myself in.”

“Emerson don’t you dare use whatever you have to open this door. I will open it whenever the hell I feel like it. Why don’t you two just continue to talk about me as if I’m not sitting right next to me? I feel invisible Emerson, and it’s your fault. Maybe I don’t know about this whole talent thing but I do know you, and this is not like you.”

“Hey cupcake, you mind opening the door? Maybe we can just calm down and stop fighting?” Connor implored. I laughed at his useless attempt.

“Connor, it’s not even worth trying. She’s stubborn as hell. Lauren, remember your responsibilities. Remember your promise. She’ll come out eventually Connor. Don’t worry about it. Let’s go finish lunch.” There was no banging on the door. No attempt to get me to open the door. Nothing, they just walked away. In a way I was glad Emerson decided to stop fighting. I decided to take a nap, besides I needed the energy. I climbed into bed with all my clothes on. I barely remembered what it felt like to sleep alone in my bed; lately all I’d been doing was sleeping with Emerson beside me.

I thought it would be difficult to fall asleep without his warm arms surrounding me and his endless inquisitions about the future. The glow that came from his reading light or the quiet snoring that lulled me back into slumber. Though, it was easier than I thought it would be. Maybe it was a sort of reassurance in my mind. That after everything I would be okay without Emerson.

That I wouldn’t be sitting around not knowing what to do with my life after he’s gone. I would be okay without him. And maybe, just maybe I would move on from Emerson. I could find another guy after him, after us.

***

“Lauren. Blue eyes… Come on. You have to wake up.” The soft voice woke me. I rubbed my eyes and rolled over to face the voice.

“Oh Laur. Thank God.” Emerson said brushing my hair away from my face and resting his hand on my cheek.

“What? I was breathing.” I mumbled.

“Of course you were… I just thought… Maybe you were still mad.” He said slowly before placing a light kiss on my forehead.

“No, I’m good.”

“Great, now go hop in the shower because Madison will throw a fit if you don’t start getting ready right now.” Emerson stood from his kneeling position and rubbed his hand down the length of my hair.

“How long did I nap?” I asked quietly.

“Not long, only an hour or so.” He sighed as he stared at me.

“Are you going to get ready too?” I asked, knowing it was a stupid question but I wanted to keep talking.

“Of course blue eyes. I’ll come back after I shower and get dressed.”

“Will you just use Madison’s shower? So you can come back and get dressed with me?” I asked very quietly.

“Sure beautiful girl. Whatever you want.”

“Where’s Connor?” I suddenly felt the need to know where he was. I sat up in bed and frantically looked around my room, I didn’t see him.

“Connor went home to get ready. He told me that he would meet us at the tent where the auction is taking place, now go get your cute self in the shower before Madison comes and rips my head off for not taking care of you. But one more thing Lauren, why did you take my ring off?” His voice turned from joking to serious in a matter of seconds.

“Oh Emerson. You know how I can be sometimes. I was just upset; I didn’t mean anything by it. I still want everything we talked about. I still want to be with you. I was just going to a little crazy so in a rush of anger I took it off.” Emerson moved to sit beside me on the bed. He rubbed the bridge of his nose as he usually did when he was upset or stressed. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

“Emerson. I still love you. I’m sorry I took the ring off. I won’t do it again.”

“Okay love. Just try not to do it again; you had me over analyzing the entire time you were napping. I love you too. I’ll be back shortly.” He bent and kissed my cheek then left. I swung my legs out of bed and stood. I felt a little dizzy, but I continued on anyways. I went and stood in front of my vanity. I looked awful. Today was an emotional roller coaster for me. Nothing a good long hot shower couldn’t fix.

I grabbed my robe and entered my bathroom. Quickly stripping my clothes off and switching on the tap to the hottest temperature I could stand. The steam almost immediately engulfed the room. I stepped in and let the water run down my body. My muscles were relaxing, finally. The ever-present tightness in my jaw was melting away like butter. Honestly, it felt good. I didn't want to hurry through my shower just to make Madison happy, I wanted to relax. Stand there with the hot water beating down my back for a while, just let go.

Of course, I was never that lucky.

"Lauren Elizabeth. You get out of that shower in ten minutes or I will come in there and drag you out myself!" Madison's voice carried through the door. She almost used my full name, she meant business. I giggled to myself and grabbed the almost empty shampoo bottle.

Ten minutes later I stepped back into my bedroom, and it had been completely transformed. In one corner there was a hairstylist setting up all his products, in the other there was a makeup artist doing the same. A long rack of clothes, shoes, and anything else that make be of use during a fashion emergency sat along one wall. Madison paced shortly.

"Where's Emerson?" I asked innocently.

"Oh honey, don't worry about him. He'll be over soon. Now go sit down with the hairstylist, he'll pick something fantastic for tonight!" Madison's eyes shone with excitement. I groaned to myself and walked over quickly.

"Hi, I'm Rico. I'll be your go to hairstylist from now on. Madison's parents got me to pencil you in, so you must be a loyal customer if they took the effort to do something like that." His voice was flat and very snooty sounding.

"I'm Lauren. It's nice to meet you." I extended my hand for him to take, but he just looked down his nose at me and shuffled me to a nearby chair. I sat down and a woman, who seemingly came out of thin air, draped a cape over my front and tied it around my neck. She promptly disappeared. The man standing behind me seemed amused with the strange look that was glued to my face, I could see his smirk in the mirror.

"Anyways, any ideas of what you would like to do with your hair? Up or down? Any preferences?" He rested his hands on my shoulders lightly and waited.

"I'm think an up do for this event, just because it is such a formal gathering." I said quietly. A door opened behind me and I looked to see Emerson enter. He was whisked away to a chair behind me before I could speak to him. Someone cleared their throat and I looked up to see Rico smiling politely at me.

"Sure sweetheart. Have you ever considered doing an half up half down sort of thing?"

"No. I think that the dress should be complimented by a simple up do, it won't attract attention. The centerpiece of the outfit will be the diamond necklace, so I don't want my hair to take away from that piece."

"Okay then, lets get started." Rico rubbed his hands together and took the towel off my head. He proceed to rake his fingers through my hair and massage my scalp softly. I made a whimpering noise, it felt delightful. I heard a laugh from behind me, it was Emerson's laugh. I closed my eyes and let Rico work his magic.

"Finished!" Rico exclaimed. I opened my eyes, my blond hair was in loose wispy fairy-like curls that escaped from a low bun to frame my face, it looked so natural. It looked flawless and I knew that it would compliment my outfit of the night.

"Oh Rico, it's wonderful. Thank you so much!" I said still studying my reflection in the mirror.

"Anytime doll." He handed me his business card and walked out of my room. The woman came back and took my cape away. I stood up and saw that Emerson was already seated in the makeup area. I giggled quietly and covered it with my hand. I didn't think my boyfriend needed any makeup, but obviously Madison had other thoughts. He had his eyes closed and had what seemed like a very annoyed look on his face. I smirked before taking the seat next to him.

A woman did a slow walk around me before stopping in front of me and studying my face intensely.

"What color is your dress?" She asked. I thought back to the one I tried on last night for Emerson. How his eyes shone when I walked out. He was the most wonderful boy I had ever met and suddenly I realized that I was completely in love with him. Not one thing in this entire universe would ever change that for me. I glanced over at him, his eyes still closed. I smiled at his frown as the makeup artist applied powder to his nose.

"Miss?" She tried again.

"Oh. Sorry. Um it's black."

"Okay, well then we'll just go for something natural." She picked up a brush and I closed my eyes. Some time later I felt the weight of hands on my shoulders and opened my eyes. Looking up I say Emerson's smiling face.

"Now you'll definitely be the prettiest girl there." He joked. The makeup artist's face formed a slight frown and I looked straight ahead again. Emerson kissed the top of my head, so lightly I could barely feel it. Then I felt his hands slip off my shoulders as he left the room.

"Are we almost done?" I asked quietly.

"One second Lauren, finishing touches." She replied.

I sat quietly while she finished my face.

"Done!" She exclaimed.

"Can I see?"

"Oh no. Just wait until you have your dress on and those shoes. Gosh. Just wait." She left the room handing me powder and lipstick to put into my clutch.

"Oh Lauren. You look so beautiful and you aren't even in your dress yet." I saw tears forming in the corners of Madison's eyes. She never cried.

"Can you help me into my dress?" I asked rising from the chair and walking to my closet.

"Sure sweetheart. Anything for you." One single tear escaped from Madison's eyes. She dabbed at it with a tissue.

I walked over to the spot where my dress hung. I ran my fingers down its length before taking it off the hanger and handing it to Madison. She unzipped in and let it hover over the ground so I could step in. I took off my clothes and carefully stepped into the dress. She shimmed the dress up and turned me around to zip up the back. I smoothed the front and walked to my full length mirror, Madison grabbed my arm and stopped me.

"Wait! I haven't given you the shoes yet." I waited for Madison to return. She came back holding a box. A man stood behind her with a folding chair that he set down behind me. I sat and took the box from Madison's hands. The shoes that were inside were beautiful.

"Oh Maddy. These are perfect. You didn't have to buy these for me." I said slowly almost tearing up but knowing better.

"I didn't buy them for you Laur. I had them made for you, they're one of a kind. I thought you might need a pick me up and shoes are a weakness of mine. I didn't realize they would turn out this perfect." She removed one shoe from the paper filled box and held it up. She turned it and admired every angle.

"You know I might need to borrow these one day. Thank god we have the same shoe size!" Madison sighed and handed the shoe back to me. Slowly I slipped it onto my foot, it was a perfect fit. They were black with lacy trimmings and an adorable bow at the front. The heel wasn't too terribly high. I silently hoped for a smooth entrance onto the stage tonight. Once both shoes were secured onto my feet I held onto Madison's shoulder and stood. I tried to walked and didn't fall over except maybe I teetered a little bit at first. My reflection in the mirror looked happy, an unexpected emotion.

"Lauren you look so beautiful. Your mother would be so proud of the girl you've grown up to be."

"Oh Maddy. You should go get ready for tonight. I'll be okay, and thank you. For being here and everything." I moved to hug my best friend since forever. With that she left to go get herself ready.

"Knock, knock."

"Oh Emerson come in." I said.

"Did I miss my chance for a hug?" He asked innocently.

"No…" He came closer and carefully leaned down and hugged me tightly to his chest. I returned his hug contently.

"Will you help me with my tie?" He released me and stood back. I went through the motions of tying his tie for him. The whole time he stared down at me with his emerald green eyes. I felt a blush creep up my neck even though I was perfectly comfortable with Emerson. I stepped back and bit my lower lip. I reached back out to tilt it to the right slightly.

"Perfect." I said slowly.

"You like?" He asked stepping closer again. I put my finger to my chin and pretended to think hard about it.

"I do, very James Bond like."

"Shaken, not stirred." He replied very seriously, that set us both off into a fit of laughter. Emerson linked his hands behind my waist and pulled me towards him.

"Well good 'cause I love." He said quietly running his hand down the side of my body. I swear the room heated up about five hundred degrees when he said that. I leaned up and gave him a peck on the lips before stepping back.

"If we stay that close together we are definitely not going to make it to this event on time." I patted his chest and walked out. Emerson caught up quickly as I was in five inch heels that had never been worn and he wasn't. A man I didn't recognize stood by the front door holding both mine and Emerson's coats.

"Oh wait!" Emerson exclaimed reaching for the man's now open hands. He opened the velvet box and brought out a gorgeous diamond necklace. Emerson moved behind me and carefully draped the necklace around my neck. He gently secured the necklace and leaned down to kiss the spot just behind my ear. This move made goosebumps appear on my arms.

"Now you're the most beautiful girl in the world." Emerson whispered to me before retrieving my coat and helping me move into it. He then donned his own coat and opened the door for me.

"Ready?" I asked peering out into the cold, quickly turning dark evening. Emerson lifted his arm and I folded my hand into it's crook.

"Let's go." With that we stepped out and walked slowly to the black town car that was waiting for us. The driver welcomed us and opened the door. The car was already warmed up, I slid into the backseat and Emerson sat next to me.

"Connor is in the car directly behind us with his guys." I felt Emerson's demeanor turn serious as he said the words and rested his hand on top of mine.

"Madison is in the car directly in front of us and there are guards in both of those cars as well as one guard in the front of this car, I know Emerson." I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.

"Lauren don't be mad. I know you think this is overkill and that Damon won't target us, but I don't want anything to happen to you blue eyes. I couldn't live with myself if I could have prevented something from happening to you, but I didn't because you thought it wasn't necessary."

"I know, really I do. You wouldn't do anything that wasn't in my best interest." I turned my head toward him and looked into his endless green eyes.

"I love you Emerson. And I would absolutely do the same thing for you if you were on the end of this loaded gun instead of me." His hand tightened over mine as he let out a low sigh and looked away from me. We were going into this thing almost completely blind and there was nothing we could do about it. I could feel Emerson's pulse in his wrist beat wildly fast, frantically. My hands were cold but his were hot and wet with nervous sweat. I interlocked our fingers trying everything to calm him down. I scooted closer and kissed the side of his face making his body tense. We pulled up to the large sweeping tent, laughter could be heard as soon as the door to the car was opened. Emerson slid out of the car taking me with him. I straightened the skirt of my dress before linking hands with Emerson again and walking towards the entrance. Cameras flashed from all directions, I felt exposed. I fixed a large smile on my face and went into the door after Emerson.

"Lauren." Someone said.

"Hey Connor, what's going on?" I replied, not really looking for an answer.

"Oh nothing really. You see your brother yet?"

"No. Why would I? It's not as if I can sense him, you should ask Emerson if that's what you're looking for."

"Smile!" Someone yelled, all three of us turned at one and put smiles on our faces as if we hadn't just been talking about a life or death situation, but rather just some teenage gossip. We returned to our huddle giving us some time without a flash in our faces.

"He's here." Emerson breathed. We all held our breath as we waited to see what would come next.
