And The Light Turns On

This is a free verse poem I've been working on, enjoy!

I drag my feet through school.

The sound of my footsteps pounding in my ears.

 I don’t see anyone else.

The kids back against the lockers in fear.

I don’t see myself and how I am.

They fear me and I don’t even know it.

I am myself.

Something inside me changes.

A switch is turned on.

I can finally see myself.

I can see the monster I have become.

 It’s like the light is on in the house.

I go back to school that fall and see the kids laughing.

I change seats in class.

I don’t put others down anymore.

I don’t hear the snickers and feel the fright anymore.

I don’t see the faces of the girls I use to be friends with. I just know that everything is okay.

 I feel better.

I feel clean.

I feel new.

And the light turns on.
