Taking StepsA Poem by MylifeinheartbeatsI guess this is a life lesson. They say taking steps is easy; one foot in front of the other like when you were in grade school with single file lines or before that when mom and dad coaxed you across the room your first steps shaky like a wispy tree in the wind or like the breaths you now take before you kiss someone You were shaky and those steps were hard one foot in front of the other didn’t make sense single file lines were as difficult to you as the classes you now take, Algebra clouding your head until taking steps became the daily like two plus two was invariably four, you walked your straight lines you stayed in your single file and slowly you lost count of how many steps you had taken whether forward or backward, in the right or wrong direction you just kind of stopped paying attention, like taking steps is easy and should be taken for granted just moving your feet with no regard to where they landed for some of us, the cracks in the sidewalk are enough to stop us we pull back our foot before it drops and suddenly taking steps is hard if you imagine how many cracks there are not just in your sidewalk but in the world and maybe you can ignore some that are small but there are craters in the ground where you thought you could step only yesterday and when obstacles come to play they’re there to stay until you can step over them braving your cracks and learning how to walk again you’ll wobble like a willow branch when the day is breezy and you’ll remember that taking a step is never easy.
