Freak landed on the soft snow after his great fall, and there he saw three knights on horses next to him. This is one example of how Freak the Mighty is different than the movie The Mighty. The following scene was never in the novel. In both of these stories of Freak the Mighty, the story follows an intelligent 13-year-old boy who carries a dictionary around with him. His name is Kevin but he preferred Freak. Freak had a disease that made his outside stop growing but his insides kept on growing. He lives with his mom who he calls  “Fair Gwen.” Max is Freak’s friend who lets him ride on his shoulders. Kevin’s only friend is Max. Those are the main similarities, but there is more differences than similarities. The novel Freak the Mighty is different than the movie for numerous reasons.

Scenes are the biggest difference between the book and the movie. There are two basketball scenes in the movie that never happened in the book.  For instance, the first basketball scene was when Blade rolled a ball at Freak and made Freak fall down. The second scene was when Kevin sat on Max’s shoulders and they played basketball and beat Blade’s team. For another example, the scene with the cafe was also never in the book. The scene shows Freak on Max’s shoulders and they walked into a cafe. In the cafe, there was a man who was harassing a young woman. As soon as Max saw this, he defended the lady, and the man furiously stormed out of the cafe. Next, the movie skipped a major scene in the book. In the book,  Kevin has a seizure during the Christmas party and is taken to the hospital. Kevin and Max spend their last moments together talking in the ICU room. Freak tells Max that he is going to go to surgery and he will come out with a new body. But he never came out of surgery. Freak grew his own body in heaven. In the movie, Kevin has a stroke and dies at home the day after Christmas.Gram told Max the news and Max ran out of his house looking for Freak, only to find the ambulance taking and driving him away. The basketball scenes, the cafe scene, and the death scene at the end, were all different in the movie than the book.

In the second place, there are little differences between the book and the movie. Like the titles are different. In the book, the title is Freak the Mighty, but the title in the movie is The Mighty. Secondly, in both stories Max and Freak both went into a sewer to get a lady’s purse and give it back to her. In the novel, Max and Freak roll in dirt to look black so nobody sees them at night. However, in the movie they just put black paint under their eyes. Last but not least, in the movie The Mighty, there is money in the purse that they returned. But in the book, there isn’t any money in the purse .The different  titles makes  it easier to understand what other people are talking about, the dirt part is different  in the movie to make the filming better, and the film added money to the purse for effect.

Therefore, the movie is different than the novel because of little things and major scenes.  The basketball scenes and the titles are two examples that were used in this essay.  What would one prefer, the novel or the movie?
