Mermaid Siren

Mermaid Siren

A Poem by Michael G Jameson

Mermaid Siren

It happened one night off of the west coast of Spain,
a beautiful mermaid began to refrain.
Just off the bow, a most mournful cry.
"Won't you please rescue me before I die?"

I soon saw her face, such astonishing eyes
but below the calm surface was one large fish thigh.
Struggling to free herself from a fish line.
I hurried up forward to help her unwind.

She called out again, she seemed in such pain
"Please take my hand" and I did not complain.
I reached out to grab it, a rescue to make
but that turned out being my biggest mistake!

She yanked me in, overboard, pulled me on down
into the murky sea depths we were bound.
But then as we stopped, peering through the abyss
She grabbed me up close and gave me a kiss.

She stared in my eyes and then shook her head.
She'd just realized that I soon would be dead.
So back to the surface where she gave me a grin,
it's funny how fast she could move with one fin.

The rescue ship nearing, she kissed me once more
and promised to meet me some night on the shore.
Now stories abound around our little town
bout the mermaid who kissed me till I nearly drown.

All along our sea coast they say it is true
there's a siren who sings the refrain
"I love you!"
