Good Morning Wake Up Call: May Part 4

Good Morning Wake Up Call: May Part 4

A Story by Gabby
"

May wraps up her encounter with Parker and has a frustrating realization about her mother.

"

"I'm sorry Parker, but you don't just ditch your girlfriend. I don't know what you're trying to do or say, but I have to be somewhere and you've been wasting my time." The thing is that I do know exactly what he's doing. But I don't understand why now, yet I don't have the time or the patience to wait for him to spell it out. As I walk away Parker interrupts, "You think I'm wasting your time? I just wanted to tell you that I..." He stops and looks at his phone, he's missed a call. I catch a glimpse of his phone screen. It's from Hannah.  "Goodbye Parker." I walk away as quickly as the large crowd in the atrium will allow. Between finding a path through other students my phone begins to vibrate in my back pocket. I pull it out to find that it's my mom calling.

"Hey, mom. I'm...umm...I'm on my way I had to talk to someone before I left." With it just being her calling I know I'm late to pick my younger sister up from her friends house. "May, I ask you to do one thing, and you always f**k it up." There she goes again, blaming me. But I know better then to fight it, otherwise things would only get worse. "I know mom, I won't do it again. We won't be late for the party. I promise."

I finally made it to my car. Before settling in my drivers seat I greedily stole breaths of fresh air. It smells like rain and the overcast sky is so comforting. But all my thoughts came flooding back in: I had finally gotten the boy I've been gawking over for years to tell me what I have always wanted to hear for so long, and I’m the one who’s rejecting him.

After getting myself together I get in my car, and it only takes ten minutes instead of the usual fifteen to make my way towards the house of my sister's best friend Willow. I park the car right next to the bright red mailbox and I can't bring myself to open the door and get out. This whole thing with Parker is overwhelming, sudden, and completely unimaginable.

A knock on the passenger window startles me. Looking over I find my sister Lyla smiling big and happy. Her eyes big and brown cushioned by the long eyelashes I've always been envious of staring at me with excitement. She opens the passenger side door and settles in the seat, but Mary is behind her. patiently waiting on the sidewalk. Willow's mother.

"Hey there! Can I talk to you for a second May?" She can see the confused look on my face and she immediately clears the air. "It'll be just for a second sweet heart." Looking at Lyla I say "I'll just be a minute." She nods and I exit the car, closing the driver side door behind me. "What's the trouble." I ask. "Well, your mother is being very...how do I put it? Blunt, very blunt about her frustrations and I can't have her speaking to me that way." Typical. "I'm so sorry she just is having a hard time recently. I'll talk to her about it." My mom always does this, ruins everything after things were just beginning to settle back down. "Okay, thank you May. You're such a good sister. You know that right?" I do know that. But, I don’t think she knows how much I’ve sacrificed just to be given that title. If only she knew what is really going on, then maybe someone could understand me just a little bit more.
