I always thought that everything would be better when I grew up. I think my understanding was that the world would be whatever I wanting it to be. It would have to listen. Because i'd be a grownup
Oh little girl,
baby girl,
what do your eyes bright see?
Realism?
or optimism?
Struggles or simplicity?
Do you know,
child,
do you know?
What the world turns out to be?
I don't wish to scare you,
child with bright eyes,
staring blankly, into empty, blue skies,
although all you see is possibility,
for what you wish, my darling child, you will not get to see.
I'm so sorry for you. I suppose I'm an incurable optimist. Don't tell her! Let her find out for herself. Don't tell her there is no Santa Claus, no Easter Bunny. Perhaps for her, they will always be there, always be real.
I'm a retired teacher. I once asked my eighth grade writing class to write a letter to Santa after finding out he was really real. Very interesting letters.
